This book provides a state-of-the-art, comprehensive review of the many factors that affect women’s health, ranging from low socioeconomic status and the impact of the debt crisis to more direct medical determinants, such as poor nutrition, hemorrhage, eclampsia, and infection. At stake are the unnecessary and preventable deaths of women and girls around the globe. The contributors assess the reduced quality of life for women and the often unacknowledged contributions of women and girls as the backbone of production in both developing and developed countries. Synthesizing perspectives of policymakers and practitioners, researchers and scholars, The Health of Women urges major new initiatives to understand and improve women’s health, taking into account biological elements such as the life cycle of women as well as cultural constraints and socioeconomic realities.

The report looks particularly at the impact of gender on occupational and environmental health; sexual and reproductive health; tuberculosis, malaria and other disease control programmes, including HIV and AIDS; and mental health. Special attention is also paid to gender and health reform and financing; quality of care; partnerships for health and capacity building and the importance of education for girls, adolescent girls and women. This forms the background for the outline of a framework for designing national health policies with an integrated gender perspective, which the report details.

This discussion paper brings together evidence and experience from around the world focusing on making health systems more gender responsive. There is a need to examine the various barriers as well as opportunities in order to make health systems work better for women, which has been a special concern for several decades now, by using a gender equality and health equity perspective. The paper uses a framework that combines WHO's six building blocks for health systems and the primary health care reforms propounded in the World Health Report 2008 on primary health care. Furthermore, the paper provides examples of what has worked and how, and ends with an agenda for action to strengthen the work of policy-makers, their advisers and development partners as well as practitioners as they seek to integrate gender equality perspectives into health systems strengthening, including primary health care (PHC) reforms.

Excerpt from The Health of the Nations By request of Her Excellency the Countess of Aberdeen, President of the International Council of Women, the affiliated National Councils of Women have prepared reports upon matters concerning Public Health in their respective countries. The Countess of Aberdeen set the lines upon which these reports should be drawn up, desiring special reference to (1) Care of Infant and Children, (2) The Conditions under which Women carry out Industrial Work, (3) Housing of the, People, and (4) Measures in force against the disease of Tuberculosis. In her letters and speeches, the President has unceasingly kept before the National Councils of Women the claims of work for Public Health, and has by her own brilliant example in Ireland provided the strongest stimulus of all in influencing the women in every country to give abundantly of their knowledge, their tact, their experience, and their womanly instincts for the encouragement of this great cause. I have willingly undertaken the editing of the reports, and have translated or condensed them where it seemed desirable. But I trust that any shortcomings will be regarded with leniency, as several of the reports were only received within a week or two of my departure for Canada, to attend the Quinquennial Sessions of the International Council of Women. The environment for women's health has changed over the last 25 years. Increased use of automobiles can lead to health risks from lack of physical activity. There has also been an increase in access to and consumption of unhealthy food. Other changes in the past 2 to 3 decades include the significant increase in the number of women who are heads of households and responsible for all aspects of a household and family. Many women now are also having children later in life, which poses interesting issues for both biology and sociology. The growing stress faced by women and the effect of stress on health and illness are issues that need a more comprehensive examination, as do issues of mental health and mental illness, which have been more common and thus increasingly prominent issues for U.S. women. In September 2015, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to shed light on important determinants, consequences, effects, and issues attending the relative disadvantage of women in the United States in comparison with women in other economically advanced nations. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
