This book provides a unique assessment of the Nigerian healthcare system's different professions. It begins by examining the fundamentals of health professions to contextualize the issues explored in the book in more detail. It goes on to present the hierarchy of occupations, professionalization, and the evolutionary path and socialization milestones that occupations attempting to attain true professions' status and power transcend. It also analyses the differences between professional autonomy, direct access, and independent practice. The latter parts identify Nigeria's primary healthcare professions and vocational careers and discuss their central roles, each discipline's specialty; including the biography of 35 notable pioneer Nigerian healthcare professionals during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The book concludes by analyzing the causes and adverse impacts of interprofessional conflict and industrial action within the Nigerian healthcare system and proposes the interdisciplinary team concept as a panacea for both conundrums. Joseph A. Balogun, FAS, is a Distinguished Professor and former Dean of the College of Health Sciences at Chicago State University and an Emeritus Professor of Physiotherapy at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo City, Nigeria. His most recent book publication is Healthcare Education in Nigeria: Evolutions and Emerging Paradigms (2020).

Dr. Jude-Harris A. Adeghe has spent his career creating and managing hospitals in the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Adeghe began realizing that the many health care options available in Nigeria-including medical clinics, medical laboratory services, physiotherapy clinics, and pharmacies-were startlingly alike. There was no variation, and patients looking for unique services were out of luck. Creative solutions are badly needed in Nigeria. Adeghe is now offering his expertise to any ambitious health care practitioners in Nigeria who want to begin their own health care organization or other services. He combines practical advice in starting a business, with industry-specific secrets of success. Adeghe teaches readers how to create the optimal organizational structures for health care businesses and to push innovation and commitment to quality in their practices. While Adeghe has tailored his advice to entrepreneurial doctors and health care practitioners in Nigeria, it can be used as a foundation for beginning a business in many other African countries. He addresses health care problems that governments in Africa face, including inadequate funding, poor physical infrastructure, and a lack of effective regulation. Adeghe shows practitioners how to respond to these challenges and provide excellent health care to their patients.

The modern-day practice of health care was imported into Nigeria over 500 years ago. In 1947, the first national health plan was developed in Nigeria with the primary goal of providing universal health care (UHC), but this goal remains elusive to date. This comprehensive book presents the roadmap needed to attain UHC in Nigeria and offers a blueprint for achieving high-quality health care in the nation. Starting with a brief overview of the Nigerian state, the fundamentals of health care, including the challenges to affordable quality healthcare delivery, the author critically examines the healthcare system in Nigeria and offers specific recommendations to invigorate the system and improve interprofessional collaborations. Each chapter includes case studies to allow readers to contextualize the information presented and behavioral learning objectives to test readers' knowledge. Among the topics covered: The Organizational Structure and Leadership of the Nigerian Healthcare System The Vulnerabilities of the Nigerian Healthcare System The Spectrum of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Emerging Developments in Traditional Medicine Practice in Nigeria The Plight of Persons Living with Disabilities: The Visible Invisibles in Nigeria A Comparative Analysis of the Health System of Nigeria and Six Selected Nations Around the World A Qualitative Investigation of the Barriers to the Delivery of High-Quality Healthcare Services in Nigeria The Political and Economic Reforms Needed to Achieve Universal and High-Quality Health Care in Nigeria Reimagining the Nigerian Healthcare System to Achieve Universal and High-Quality Health Care by 2030 The Nigerian Healthcare System: Pathway to Universal and High-Quality Health Care is ideal for adoption as a textbook in health services administration, health policy and management, health informatics, healthcare delivery systems, and primary health care courses offered at universities in Nigeria. It also would appeal to students and faculty in African diaspora programs internationally. The book is also essential for policymakers, health systems technocrats, researchers, and professionals in various health disciplines, including medicine, nursing, and allied health.

Comparative Health Law And Policy written by Irehobhude O. Iyioha and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-23 with Law categories.

Health law and policy in Nigeria is an evolving and complex field of law, spanning a broad legal landscape and drawn from various sources. In addressing and interacting with these sources the volume advances research on health care law and policy in Nigeria and spells the beginning of what may now be formally termed the ’Nigerian health law and policy’ legal field. The collection provides a comparative analysis of relevant health policies and laws, such as reproductive and sexual health policy, organ donation and transplantation, abortion and assisted conception, with those in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and South Africa. It critically examines the duties and rights of physicians, patients, health institutions and organizations, and government parastatals against the backdrop of increased awareness of rights among patient populations. The subjects, which are discussed from a legal, ethical and policy-reform perspective, critique current legislation and policies and make suggestions for reform. The volume presents a cohesive, comparative, and comprehensive analysis of the state of health law and policy in Nigeria with those in the US, Canada, South Africa, and the UK. As such, it provides a valuable comparison between Western and Non-Western countries.
