Healthy development is recognized as a multidimensional concept incorporating both the concepts of health and development. Methodological challenges have restricted the empirical investigation of comprehensive models of healthy development. The global research objective of this thesis was to build and test an analytical model of healthy development that incorporated the child, the environment, and the process of development over time. The specific objectives were to determine the relative contribution of the characteristics of the child at birth and at age 2/3 years and the family environment at age 2/3 years to the prediction of outcomes of competence and dysfunction at age 4/5 years and to examine the role of parenting as a proximal process in child development in the pre-school years. The model was tested on a sample of 2,538 children (1,324 boys and 1,214 girls). Longitudinal data was collected from the first two cycles of the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY). The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-R) was used as a measure of cognitive competence and a parent report of externalizing behaviour problems was used as a measure of behavioural dysfunction. Multi-stage generalized linear regression was used to map the path of development from birth to school age beginning with neonatal status, followed by measures of temperament, behaviour, and then health and development at age 2/3 years. Likewise, the analysis mapped the pathway of environmental influence from distal to proximal factors, beginning with family structure, followed by measures of family resources and then family functioning. Both child and family factors contributed equally to the prediction of outcomes at school age. Delays identified in the preschool years were the strongest predictors of outcomes at school age. The most important factor in the family environment was parental education. Post-secondary education was truly protective in that it helped overcome early delays in development. Support was found for the role of positive parenting as a direct predictor of cognitive competence. Hostile/ineffective parenting mediated the relationship between preschool externalizing behaviour and cognitive competence at school age.
