Strong & Healthy Smiles will change the lives of over 50 impoverished children who are considered "untouchables" by much of Indian society. In partnership with Speak 4 Silent Voices, a 501c3 non-profit organization, this program will provide dental care and dental hygiene education to impoverished children living in Kolkata, India who have never visited the dentist before. Stigma associated with poor dental hygiene contributes to the perpetual cycle of oppression affecting the Indian poor. This program will provide dental care to children whose education is already sponsored by Speak 4 Silent Voices, but who do not have access to dental care. The number one disease affecting children around the world today is tooth decay. Poor dental hygiene can negatively affect individuals on a variety of levels, from physical pain, to problems eating, to low self-esteem. The goal of Speak 4 Silent Voices in educating impoverished children is for the children to build their way up out of poverty through increasing their potential to find employment when they reach adulthood. If children's basic health needs are not met, they may grow up with permanent physical signs on their poverty. Among these visible signs is poor dental hygiene. While education is fundamental for breaking the cycle of poverty and oppression, health care is, v as well. The goal for this program is to offer first time dental care to 18 children Speak 4 Silent Voices currently sponsors in school, as well as, to be able to expand the dental program to include children from partner organizations. In addition, the program will educate children living in slums about the importance of dental hygiene, while distributing toothbrushes and toothpastes to more than 100 children annually. In order to obtain funding for this project, we will apply for a general grant from the Colgate Foundation and from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We will also attempt to create a dental sponsorship program by pairing funding from dental offices in California with children in need of dental care in Kolkata, India.
