A Christmas letter from a Polish friend, describing bitter cold and no boots, galvanized Helen de Borchgrave to travel to Poland in March 1984. The country was recovering from martial law, and lacked most things the west take for granted. As well as much-needed provisions, she smuggled forbidden books. Helen was one of a handful of Westerners invited to work in the country at that time. During the course of three years she returned regularly to restore masterpieces in the famous Wawel Castle Museum in Krakow, the first picture conservator from the west since World War II. In her memoir, based on journals she kept, Helen charts in meticulous detail her observations of an impoverished but resilient people struggling under Communism. From an encounter with Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, to learning about Polish art, history and politics, befriending Poland's underground network of artists in their fight for human rights, to the Chernobyl disaster, Helen shares the stories of the fascinating people she met, and became friends with, on her travels. Their fortitude and faith was an inspiration to her.

Abandonment To Divine Providence written by Jean-Pierre De Caussade and has been published by Ignatius Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-06 with Religion categories.

God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is His will for each of us. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to ""live in the present moment,"" accepting everyday obstacles with faith, humility and love, has guided generations of believers to holiness and spiritual peace. This special volume of the famous spiritual treatise also includes the many insightful letters of Father de Caussade on the practice of self-abandonment. These numerous letters provide a great additional source of wisdom and practical guidance for how to grow in abandonment and to deepen our union with God in our daily lives. De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God's will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people - from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God's will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from His hand. The rich spiritual lessons in this book have stood the test of time, offering real and practical assistance to all people because its message is simple and clear, one that the reader will find to be a rare treasure of inspiration and direction to be referred to again and again.

"This volume is a reprint of newspaper reports of a series of lectures delivered by the author from the pulpit of Congregation B'nai Jehudah, Kansas City, Mo., during the Fall and Winter of 1885-1886. The lectures were prepared to fulfill the requirements of popular discourses, and designed to convey information upon a highly important epoch of the world's history, that is almost neglected in English literature. The thought of publishing these lectures in book form was utterly foreign to the author throughout their preparation, until an urgent solicitation from very many persons, both Jews and Gentiles, in all parts of this country, whose interest in these lectures was aroused by their wide-spread republication by the Press, made it a duty."--Goodreads.com.

A Thousand And One Afternoons In Chicago written by Ben Hecht and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-05-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In 1921, Ben Hecht wrote a column for the Chicago Daily News that his editor called “journalism extraordinary; journalism that invaded the realm of literature.” Hecht’s collection of sixty-four of these pieces, illustrated with striking pen drawings by Herman Rosse, is a timeless caricature of urban American life in the jazz age, updated with a new Introduction for the twenty-first century. From the glittering opulence of Michigan Avenue to the darkest ruminations of an escaped convict, from captains of industry to immigrant day laborers, Hecht captures 1920s Chicago in all its furor, intensity, and absurdity. “The hardboiled audacity and wit that became Hecht’s signature as Hollywood’s most celebrated screen-writer are conspicuous in these vignettes. Most of them are comic and sardonic, some strike muted tragic or somber atmospheric notes. . . . The best are timeless character sketches that have taken on an added interest as shards of social history.”—L. S. Klepp, Voice Literary Supplement
