This book studies how poetic structure transforms verbal imitations of religious experience into concepts. The book investigates how such a conceptual language can convey such non-conceptual experiences as meditation, ecstasy or mystic insights. Briefly, it explores how the poet, by using words, can express the 'ineffable'. It submits to close reading English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Armenian and Hebrew texts, from the Bible, through medieval, renaissance, metaphysical, and baroque poetry, to romantic and symbolistic poetry.

Alfred Armistead and Henry Hinchliffe are partners in Blackshaw Mills, a cloth-manufacturing firm in Yorkshire. The Armistead and Hinchliffe families differ in politics, in religion, in social outlook, but with their workmen they are representative architects of the modern social fabric. Henry Hinchliffe's children are Edward, the steady man of affairs; Frederick, the rebellious student; Grace, the reformer. The Armisteads are Gwen the enigma, Ludo the compassionate, Laura the artistic. The families intermarry; the war takes its toll. Meanwhile the partners in Blackshaw Mills quarrel, and reunite; enjoy prosperity, are hard hit by strike and slump, and presently pass on to their sons their unsettled problems. Now the third generation is rising: Geoffrey and Madeline, divergent children of divergent parents; Kay, illegitimate son. Every generation, as Feuchtwanger has observed, says in its turn to its parents: "Sleep in peace! I will be different from you". The generation of Grace and Laura has struggled passionately with the problems of duty and freedom, the common good and the individual achievement; the worth of their struggle will be revealed by the solutions of the next generation. Geoffrey looks to the right for his solution, Kay to the left; gradually the transition is accomplished. Sleep in Peace combines with deep understanding of men and women all the richness of the novelist's art.

A revised, enlarged, and updated edition of this authoritative and entertaining reference book —named the #2 essential home library reference book by the Wall Street Journal “Shapiro does original research, earning [this] volume a place on the quotation shelf next to Bartlett's and Oxford's.”—William Safire, New York Times Magazine (on the original edition) “A quotations book with footnotes that are as fascinating to read as the quotes themselves.”—Arthur Spiegelman, Washington Post Book World (on the original edition) Updated to include more than a thousand new quotations, this reader-friendly volume contains over twelve thousand famous quotations, arranged alphabetically by author and sourced from literature, history, popular culture, sports, digital culture, science, politics, law, the social sciences, and all other aspects of human activity. Contemporaries added to this edition include Beyoncé, Sandra Cisneros, James Comey, Drake, Louise Glück, LeBron James, Brett Kavanaugh, Lady Gaga, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Barack Obama, John Oliver, Nancy Pelosi, Vladimir Putin, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, and David Foster Wallace. The volume also reflects path-breaking recent research resulting in the updating of quotations from the first edition with more accurate wording or attribution. It has also incorporated noncontemporary quotations that have become relevant to the present day. In addition, The New Yale Book of Quotations reveals the striking fact that women originated many familiar quotations, yet their roles have been forgotten and their verbal inventions have often been credited to prominent men instead. This book’s quotations, annotations, extensive cross-references, and large keyword index will satisfy both the reader who seeks specific information and the curious browser who appreciates an amble through entertaining pages.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a child-centered, Montessori-based process of Christian formation. Since 1984, catechists in the United States who have worked in the Catechesis have exchanged the fruits of their work -- children's drawings, work, and prayers; practical ideas and how-to's -- and materials for study and encouragement in an annual journal. These collected journals from 1984 to 1997, and now from 1998 to 2002, provide a valuable resource for Good Shepherd catechists and a history of their work in the United States for anyone interested in knowing more about the Catechesis. Miss Miles written by Mary Taylor and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-03-07 with Fiction categories.

The close friendship between Charlotte Brontë and Mary Taylor began in boarding school and lasted for the rest of their lives. It was Mary Taylor, in fact, who inspired Brontë to leave her oppressive parsonage home and go to Brussels, the eventual setting for her novel, Villette. Mary herself led a much less restricted life, especially in her later years as a feminist essayist who strongly urged women to consider their "first duty" to be working to support themselves. In Miss Miles, her only novel, Taylor breaks with tradition by creating a profoundly feminist and morally intense work which depicts women's friendships as sustaining life and sanity through all of the vicissitudes of Victorian womanhood. She also introduces an innovative narrative form which Janet Murray (who has written an introduction for this edition) calls a "feminist bildungsroman": the story of the education of several heroines which emphasizes their friendship and economic and mental well-being rather than their love lives. Set in the small Yorkshire village of Repton against the backdrop of starvation in the wool districts and the rise of Chartism in the 1830s, this recovered feminist classic chronicles the lives of four disparate and individually ambitious women as they learn to find their own voices and support one another. The novel's emphasis on the healing power of women's friendships echoes the relationship between Brontë and Taylor herself. Originally published in 1890, Miss Miles has been unavailable for decades. Its reappearance will delight all lovers of fine literature.
