Excerpt from Hebrew Men and Times, From the Patriarchs to the Messiah About ten years ago, in undertaking a course of lectures on portions of the Jewish and Christian annals, I felt very much the want of some such guide as I have tried to furnish here. The singular interest of the Hebrew history, - its epical unity and completeness, - its place and connection literature which contains it, and the peculiarly sacred relation it bears to the religious life and faith of men, - these, of course, have not escaped the attention of scholars. And the body of literature that has gathered about this topic is perhaps equal in richness and breadth to that in any other field. Excerpt from Hebrew Men and Times, From the Patriarchs to the Messiah De's; of Sentiments, memories, and hopes that have become part of their religious nature. Hebron and Bethlehem, Bethe], Sharon, and Carmel, Mount Zion, the Sea of Galilee, and the river Jordan, are the household words of Christian imagery; and when David had taken the strong rock-fort of Jebus, he made of it a city so holy, as that its very name should be music for ever. Excerpt from History of the Jewish Nation: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The history of no nation is so intimately connected with the welfare of the whole human race as that of the Jews. Immanuel was a Jew, and for this reason, if for no other, mankind would have an interest in tracing the narrative of the race to which that mighty Personage belonged. The Jews are the people of promise, to whom the Divine Word stands pledged, in a sense which is true of no other nation ality. They stand nearer to God, in certain respects, than any other people. The Jews are the people of prophecy. The things foretold concerning them in one age are fulfilled in another. Prophecy and its fulfillment are in them joined closely together. History, within a certain limited range, exists and is written for their sakes. In their gradually developing history, the word of Jehovah stands, as it were, on trial; and the reverent mind takes the deepest interest in inquiring what is the issue of this test. Is the Divine word, in the gradual unfolding of the ages, fulfilled? And he who worthily sets forth the materials for the answering of this question, does a service to theology, to learning, to history, and to every curious inquirer. God made promises to the Hebrew nation from the days of Abraham till the close of the Old Testament Scripture. He threatened evil to them as the fmit of rebellion and sin. Have the good things promised, and has the evil threatened come to the nation in alternating succession, in proportion to their varying deserts? The Jews who lived in the times of the incarnation of Christ imprecated curses upon themselves and their children for the share they chose to take in compassing the death of the Son of God. Has the curse rested upon the people? Do they feel, in their present separation from the nations of the earth, in the lack of respect with which they are, as a general rule, regarded, in the cruel persecutions which have been visited upon them, and in their stubborn blindness to the light of the Gospel, the awful cfiect of Divine displeasure These questions, as they are continuously solved by history, hold an important relation to the theology of the world. While the Divine omni presence is a truth universally conceded, and which needs no argument, we find in the Jewish nation and its history, the most convincing illustration of that doctrine. In the Jewish history God stands forth before men, an acknowledged, a present God, a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate him. If other histories are so written as to seem like events without a God, the Jewish history is a history with God every where embodied, and everywhere apparent. The history of the Jewish people is a commentary on the Divine faithfulness and veracity, and in it God brings himself very near to men. c. 385 pp. 30 / $47.50 / 35 Scholar's Price 60 / $95 / 70 List Price Hardback Men and Masculinity in the Hebrew Bible and Beyond Edited by Ovidiu Creang The study of masculinity in the Bible is increasingly becoming established as a field of critical inquiry in biblical gender studies. This book highlights a variety of methodological approaches that reveal the complex and multifaceted construction of masculinity in biblical and post-biblical literature. It focuses uniquely and explicitly on men and the world they inhabit, documenting changes in the type of men and masculinities deemed legitimate, or illegitimate, across various social and historical contexts of the ancient Near East. At the same time, it interrogates readers' assumptions about the writers' positioning of male bodies, sexuality and relationships in a gender order created to reflect men's interests, yet in need of constant reordering In this volume specific features of biblical masculinity are explored: the masculinity of less favoured sons in Genesis (Susan Haddox); the ideology of Temple masculinity in Chronicles (Roland Boer); the masculinity of Moses (Brian DiPalma); the performative nature of masculinity in the Sinai episode (David Clines); Deuteronomy's regimentation of masculinity (Mark George); Joshua's hegemonic masculinity in the Conquest Narrative (Ovidiu Creang ); Na'aman's disability in relation to ideologies of masculinity (Cheryl Strimple and Ovidiu Creang ); Job's position as a man in charge in the Testament of Job (Maria Haralambakis); Priestly notions of sexuality in the covenant of the rainbow and circumcision in Genesis (Sandra Jacobs); Samson's masculinity in terms of male honour (Ela Lazarewicz-Wyrzykowska); the popular depiction of Jeremiah as a 'lamenting prophet' against the book of Jeremiah's male ideology (C.J. Patrick Davis); the gendered interaction of a Bible-study group with Daniel's dreams (Andrew Todd). Finally, David J.A. Clines and Stephen D. Moore offer closing critical reflections that situate the book's topics within a broader spectrum of issues in masculinity."
