La storia della filosofia come disciplina separata e operante iuxta propria principia sorge sia da una progressiva divisione degli ambiti del sapere, sia come risultato di un processo di maturazione etica e storica. Secondo Hegel, essa non si giustifica soltanto in chiave sistematica, bensì preliminarmente in prospettiva storica e fenomenologica. Storia della filosofia e filosofia della storia sono due frutti del nuovo mondo che ha prodotto – e giustificato – la cognizione della propria genesi. La storia della filosofia affonda le sue radici nella critica del Seicento e nell’Aufklärung, motori della mentalità moderna ben radicati nell’Umanesimo e nella Riforma, ma dell’uno e dell’altra rivoluzionari interpreti. Dar evidenza di tale processo è lo scopo di questa ricerca che prende in esame i prodromi europei (dovuti per lo più a Thomas Stanley, Gerhard Johannes Voss, Pierre-Daniel Huet), per poi volgersi ad autori tedeschi come Christoph August Heumann, Johann Franz Budde, Johann Jakob Brucker, Christian Garve e molti altri più e meno noti.
