Hegel's philosophical interpretation of Trinity as a dialectically developing movement of Spirit is one of the most profound readings of Trinity in Western thought. In Hegel's Trinitarian Claim, Dale M. This book compares two Trinitarian studies, those of Hegel’s and Aquinas’s Trinitarian treatises, following upon Augustine’s De trinitate. It distinguishes, regarding Hegel, doctrinal development of earlier texts from contradiction or false rationalisation (“logicisation”) thereof, or from their mere repetition. All separation of philosophy and theology is renounced, consistently with “absolute idealism” as defended here. Historical contexts are nonetheless respected in this book. Hegel, the profoundest Trinitarian philosopher-theologian since at least Aquinas, claims that ultimately “revealed” truth generally “belongs to the philosophical order” of necessity. Faith finds philosophical credentials in this universalist (kat’holon) expansion of “the sacred”, ripping the veil. Near-perfect harmony is found beneath Hegel’s and Aquinas’s very different idioms, post-Kantian and medieval respectively, a mixture suited to induce further scholarly treatment or, for readers generally, enriched participation in what emerges as multi-implicative for man’s or thought’s self-understanding. Full citations of relevant texts, Thomist (Latin and English) and Hegelian (English alone), are provided throughout the books.

Hegel's philosophy of religion is a philosophical theology in which God is conceived as a movement of inclusive divine subjectivity - ultimately God inclusive of the world. For Hegel, this inclusive divine subjectivity took the form of a movement of conceptual thought. In an effort to work with Hegel while going beyond him, Experience and Spirit presents God as a movement of inclusive divine subjectivity; however, that movement is understood to be not one of thought but of enriching experience and, thus, of spirit. This argument in favor of a renewed understanding of Hegel's true infinite proceeds in three major steps: first, a consideration of Hegel's own problematic proposal; second, the elaboration of a fuller and more contemporary notion of experience; and, third, three constructive phenomenological and philosophical reflections on basic questions in philosophical theology, namely, the experience of God, speaking about God, and the notions of evil, freedom, and mystery. In the end, Experience and Spirit proposes a philosophy of generosity, both human and divine.

Originally published in 2001, Hegel's Metaphysics of God presents Hegel's response to Kant's claim that metaphysics in general and, in particular, knowledge of God, is beyond the grasp of human knowledge. Calton argues that Hegel uses his version of the ontological proof not only to establish the existence of God, but also to develop a Trinitarian divine ontology. The book opens with a discussion of the traditional version of the ontological proof as it is set out by Anselm in his Proslogium and an analysis of the critiques of this traditional formulation of the proof offered by both Kant and Hegel. However, the main focus of the book concerns Hegel's reformulation of the ontological proof as a description of God's self-expression in the world and of God's attaining complete self-knowledge through human consciousness. Exploring Hegel's proof as his description of God's activity of self-expression and self-knowledge, Calton demonstrates that Hegel uses the ontological proof not only to establish that God exists, but also to articulate the Trinitarian structure of God, pointing to conclusions drawn by Hegel that human knowledge of God participates in the life of God by completing the Trinity. The book concludes by explaining the role played by human consciousness in completing the Trinity through the reasoning that takes place in the ontological proof. This book details the development of Hegel's argument for a Trinitarian metaphysics of God and establishes that the structure of Hegel's ontological proof encompasses Hegel's entire philosophical system, from the concept of God, to God's self-expression in finitude, and, finally, to the recognition on the part of human consciousness that humans are an integral part of God's being.

Since the nineteenth century, many philosophical and theological commentators have sought to trace lines of continuity between the Trinitarian thought of Augustine of Hippo (354–430) and G. W. F. Hegel (1770–1831). Many contemporary Christian theologians have also criticized Augustine's Trinitarian theology generally and his doctrine of the Holy Spirit more specifically through this historical lens. At the same time, Hegelian Trinitarian conceptual dynamics have come to exert a strong influence over contemporary Trinitarian theology. In Life in the Spirit, Douglas Finn seeks to redress several imbalances with respect to Augustine, imbalances that have one of their hermeneutic causes in a Hegelian-influenced theological tradition. Finn argues that common readings of Augustine focus too much on his De Trinitate, books 8–15, betraying a modern—and to some extent Hegelian—prejudice against considering sermons and biblical commentaries serious theological work. This broadening of Augustinian texts allows Finn to critique readings of Augustine that, on the one hand, narrow his Trinitarian theology to the so-called psychological analogy and thus chart him on a path to Descartes and Hegel, or, on the other hand, suggest he sacrifices a theology of the Trinitarian persons on the altar of divine substance. Augustine's Trinitarian theology on Finn's reading is one fully engaged with God's work in history. With this renewed understanding of Augustine's Trinitarianism, Finn allows Augustine to interrogate Hegel with his concerns rather than only the other way around. In this ambitious study, Finn shows that Hegel's rendition of Christianity systematically obviates whole swaths of Christian prayer and practice. He does this nonpolemically, carefully, and with meticulous attention to the texts of both great thinkers.
