In The Vitality of Contradiction, Bruce Gilbert provides an exposition of Hegel's political philosophy to establish not only that societies fail because of their contradictions, but also how the unsurpassable oppositions of social life cultivate freedom. He moves beyond Hegel's works to consider the limits of liberal-capitalism and the contemporary social movements around the world that stretch us beyond the global economic system. Drawing on key Hegel texts such as Phenomenology of Spirit and the Philosophy of Right, Gilbert shows how societies outgrow themselves as they come to recognize key aspects of freedom and justice. He argues that the dialectic requires that we recognize how liberal-capitalism has both cultivated freedom and yet fails to lead us to more sophisticated forms of freedom. Since the 1960s 'New Left' emancipatory movements have claimed that women, ethnic minorities, gays and lesbians, and other groups are oppressed. Some liberal theorists have treated their demands for equality as matters of toleration, of securing by law the equal treatment of cultures and conceptions of the good. However, much more is involved. Also at stake are conceptions of identity differences that inform social practices and perpetuate inequalities that are beyond the reach of legislation. This book outlines an alternative approach to a liberal politics of difference. Sybol Anderson begins by constructing a definition of oppression that illuminates, from a liberal perspective, its salient features. Exposing the limits of toleration as a response, Anderson reaches beyond it for a viable concept of recognition. Hegel's theory of recognition proves an indispensable resource in this endeavor. Anderson concludes, contrary to recent critics of Hegelian recognition, that Hegel's theory can successfully guide modern liberal states toward the achievement of social equality.

El motivo de este pequeño e importante escrito de Hegel consiste en que, si bien Alemania era una nación, estaba dividida su rica variedad en múltiples estadículos por lo que no existía un auténtico Estado, ya que el vetusto Sacro Imperio de origen medieval sólo le daba una unidad formal. Pues los estadículos —una especie de autonomías soberanas— justificaban sus viejos privilegios o derechos particulares invocando la antigua «libertad alemana», para impedir que el Imperio tuviese un poder efectivo. Incluso, en detrimento de Alemania y los alemanes, las autonomías se aliaban entre sí o con los poderes extranjeros cuando dirimían sus diferencias en el suelo alemán, según sus conveniencias y simpatías particulares. Sin una unidad real, Alemania estaba fuera de la historia universal: carente de un auténtico Estado capaz de organizarla a la altura de los tiempos y de defenderla, no sólo no era un sujeto de la historia sino su objeto.
