The last decade has undoubtedly been the most controversial in the long literary career of Martin Walser. This volume presents a review of this career, going far beyond short-lived arguments to present an insightful overview of much of his work. It considers not only major aspects of his writing, covering both his literary beginnings and the most recent works, but also different, previously neglected features of his persona and his writing, namely his activity as a university teacher and his art criticism. In addition, fruitful comparisons are made with other writers, such as Proust, Grass and Uwe Johnson. At the same time, recent controversies are also considered with major attention being paid to Walser’s public speeches and those works of fiction which have been seen by some as demanding the end of German self-recriminations over the Nazi past. This book explores the interplay between global and local influences in theatre festivals in the German-speaking border region around Lake Constance. Whilst opening up a fascinating yet under-researched theatre region to academic study, it also provides much-needed empirical grounding for often vague theories of place, globalisation and culture. Do we really live in a 'shrinking world' dominated by a homogenising global culture industry, or are we experiencing the revival of 'local particularism'? To what extent is an apparently place-dependent cultural form such as theatre affected by the processes of cultural globalisation? Through detailed analysis of theatrical case studies from Lake Constance and the application of an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, this book begins to answer such important questions. The empirical focus is on the defining features of the Lake Constance region: the beautiful and often romanticised natural landscape of lake and mountains, and the presence of the nation-state borders which make this the crossroads of the German-speaking world. The author thus examines both open-air summer theatre festivals, such as the internationally renowned Bregenzer Festspiele, and politically focused cross-border theatre festivals, such as the youth festival TRIANGEL.

Nachdem der Begriff «Heimat» durch den Mißbrauch in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus aus der Öffentlichkeit nahezu verbannt war, kann man heute von einem regelrechten Heimatboom sprechen. Dem aus der theoretischen Diskussion des im Alltagsgebrauch nach wie vor unscharfen und emotionalen Begriffs gewonnenen Konzept «Heimat» werden in der Folge poetologische Kategorien der literarischen Gestaltung von Heimat gegenübergestellt. Die Analyse der in den 70er Jahren erschienenen Werke von Autoren wie Handke, Innerhofer, Johnson, Lenz oder Martin Walser führt dabei zu einem überraschenden Ergebnis: der zuvor postulierten Fähigkeit des Individuums zum «Prospective Adjustment» als wesentlicher Bedingung moderner Existenz steht die unaufgelöste Spannung zwischen Nostalgie und Utopie in der Literatur entgegen.
