Teos on pitkään hiotusta mutta kesken jääneestä käsikirjoituksesta muokattu ja huomautuksin sekä alku- ja jälkisanoin varustettu toimite. Se on ensimmäinen elämäkerta kääntäjänä valtavasti urakoineesta mutta sangen harvoja alkuperäiskirjoja tehneestä Otto Mannisesta, joka oli myös kriitikkona, toimittajana ja kirjallisena neuvonantajana tärkeimpiä hahmoja viime vuosisadan alkukymmenten Suomessa. Kirja vie lukijan niin Mannisen synnyin- ja asuinseudulle Savoon kuin ratkaiseviin yhteyksiin eritoten Eino Leinon ja aviopuolisoksi 1907 tulleen Anni Swanin kanssa. Vaikka valittu elämäkerrallinen lähestymistapa runoihin on monin tavoin askarruttava, myös säkeiden erittely tarjoaa antoisaa pohdittavaa nykylukijoillekin. Kirjan toimittajat vievät asiantuntevasti työn ja tulkintavan historiallisiin ja teoreettisiin yhteyksiinsä: tuloksena on täysipainoinen opus ehkä huimaavimmasta suomen kielen taiturista. Kuvitettu teos sisältää runsaasti fotografiaa vakavasti harrastaneen Mannisen itse valmistamia omakuvia ja tyylikkäitä potretteja etenkin Leinosta ja Swanista.
