Das Werk des Architekten Heino Schmieden (1835–1913) ist für die Architekturentwicklung in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts von besonderer Bedeutung, da in seinen Projekten exemplarisch die Vielschichtigkeit dieser Epoche sichtbar wird. Noch heute prägen seine Bauten als bedeutende Kulturdenkmäler das städtische Antlitz Berlins. Doch gleichermaßen charakteristisch für das Werk Schmiedens sind auch zahlreiche weniger bekannte, qualitätvolle Kultur-, Wohn- und Geschäftsbauten sowie nicht zuletzt viele Krankenhausbauten in Deutschland, der Schweiz, in Polen, Tschechien, Russland, Griechenland und Argentinien. Der hier erstmals vorgestellte Katalog seiner Bauten und Entwürfe umfasst 165 Arbeiten. Über Heino Schmieden und sein Werk ist bisher leider nur wenig bekannt. Welche Bauwerke sind mit seinem Wirken verbunden, wie verlief sein Leben? Und welche Rolle spielte er in der Entwurfsgemeinschaft mit Martin Gropius, die von 1866 bis 1880 bestand? Nach der im Lukas Verlag unlängst erschienenen Monographie über Martin Gropius von Arnold Körte wird mit dem vorliegenden Band eine weitere Forschungslücke geschlossen. Darin stellt der Autor neben dem Geheimen Baurat Dr. Ing. hc. Johann Heino Schmieden, der jahrzehntelang als Mitglied sowohl der Akademie des Bauwesens als auch der Akademie der Künste aktiv und erfolgreich wirkte, auch dessen weitere Atelierpartner Viktor von Weltzien, Rudolph Speer, Julius Boethke und Heinrich Schmieden vor, mit denen ersterer nach Gropius’ Tod in den folgenden dreiunddreißig Berufsjahren zusammenarbeitete.

A compelling and innovative account that reshapes our view of nineteenth-century chemistry, explaining a critical period in chemistry’s quest to understand and manipulate organic nature. According to existing histories, theory drove chemistry’s remarkable nineteenth-century development. In Molecular World, Catherine M. Jackson shows instead how novel experimental approaches combined with what she calls “laboratory reasoning” enabled chemists to bridge wet chemistry and abstract concepts and, in so doing, create the molecular world. Jackson introduces a series of practice-based breakthroughs that include chemistry’s move into lampworked glassware, the field’s turn to synthesis and subsequent struggles to characterize and differentiate the products of synthesis, and the gradual development of institutional chemical laboratories, an advance accelerated by synthesis and the dangers it introduced. Jackson’s historical reassessment emerges from the investigation of alkaloids by German chemists Justus Liebig, August Wilhelm Hofmann, and Albert Ladenburg. Stymied in his own research, Liebig steered his student Hofmann into pioneering synthesis as a new investigative method. Hofmann’s practice-based laboratory reasoning produced a major theoretical advance, but he failed to make alkaloids. That landmark fell to Ladenburg, who turned to cutting-edge theory only after his successful synthesis. In telling the story of these scientists and their peers, Jackson reveals organic synthesis as the ground chemists stood upon to forge a new relationship between experiment and theory—with far-reaching consequences for chemistry as a discipline.

In the 19th century Hungary witnessed unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. The country became an equal partner within the Dual Monarchy when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was concluded. Architecture and all forms of design flourished as never before. A distinctly Central European taste emerged, in which the artistic presence of the German-speaking lands was augmented by the influence of France and England. As this process unfolded, attempts were made to find a uniquely Hungarian form, based on motifs borrowed from peasant art as well as real (or fictitious) historical antecedents. "Motherland and Progress" – the motto of 19th-century Hungarian reformers – reflected the programme embraced by the country in its drive to define its identity and shape its future.
