Driven by the need to produce more food for an ever-increasing population that is further marred with declining and degrading natural resource base, adapting to and mitigating climate change have posed a big challenge. It is an established fact that in agriculture, fertilizers, flooded rice cultivation, energy use in irrigation, tillage, and enteric emissions from ruminant animals are the main contributors of greenhouse gases, which accounts to about one-fourth of the total emissions. The evolution of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) emerged as a scientific response to this multi-headed hydra, which helps achieve higher production with reduced emission. The fact remains that the small farm holders of South Asia, who are already facing several non-climatic stresses, have limited capacity to adopt new technologies. There are a host of barriers in the form of limited access to natural resources, information, finance, and above all, low human capital that limit the adoption of technology. The global community is aware of these climate change challenges and has initiated programs to overcome these challenges across the world. In this context, and to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, there is a need for evidence-based research that have the potential to bring about transformative change in agriculture and food systems.

Strengthening Local Governance In Bangladesh written by Shuvra Chowdhury and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-23 with Law categories.

This book explores the impact of Bangladesh's Local Government Act of 2009 on the functioning of the local governments or Union Parishads (UP), with a particular emphasis on people’s participation and accountability. Throughout the chapters, the authors review the existing legal framework of UP and its relation to social accountability, examine how much of the social participation is spontaneous and how much is politically induced, question the success of the Citizen's Charter and Right to Information acts as mechanisms for social accountability, and present suggestions to remedy some of the problems facing people's participation and accountability in the UP. This book fills existing gaps in the discourse by adding new information to the literature on development research and legal reforms in Bangladesh, specifically in how those legal reforms have led to strengthening or weakening people's participation in local government. The target audience for this book are students and researchers in Asian studies , international development studies, and public administration, as well as practitioners working in the local governments discussed.

This is the story of a dynasty founded by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a Max Weberian Charismatic leader but unfortunately not a statesman who established a one-party rule, which led to a rebellion and his predictable death. Mujib died of his self-inflicted wound called BAKSAL Dictatorship. Mujib is not frozen in time; his daughter, Sheikh Hasina (the “digital dictator”), and her Awami cadres (followers) continue Mujib’s brutal BAKSAL tradition. On the parliament floor, Mujib boasted about his government’s extrajudicial killing and exclaimed, “Sheraj Shikder, where are you now?” These and other remarks by Mujib show his problems with self-discipline. Pinaki Bhattacharya, a researcher on Bangladesh politics, says, “Mujib was a great trickster.”

Climate Environmental Hazards And Migration In Bangladesh written by Max Martin and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-20 with Science categories.

The apocalyptic visions of climate change that are projected in the media often involve extreme weather events, disasters and mass migration of poor people. This book takes a critical look at this notion, drawing on research in Bangladesh, a country located at the heart of debates on climate change and migration. This book argues that rather than leading to dramatic events, climatic and environmental impacts often cause incremental changes in people’s habitats and livelihoods, making them migrate in search of better places and income. With or without climate change, climatic and environmental factors can impoverish people, and drive displacement and migration, especially in the global South. These influences, including disasters, need not necessarily make people move, but instead sometimes trap the poorest and the most vulnerable people in their places exposed to hazards or make them migrate to even riskier places, such as crowded and flood-prone urban slums. This book argues that restrictions placed on people’s mobility options could increase their vulnerability and favours proactive migration policies. This timely contribution explains the climate-hazard-migration nexus in an accessible, engaging language for students of geography, development studies, politics and environmental studies, as well as humanitarian and development practitioners and policymakers.

Disaster And Gender In Coastal Bangladesh written by Mohammed Moniruzzaman Khan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-22 with Social Science categories.

This volume explores the discourse of disaster and women in the existing social settings and state disaster-related affairs in coastal Bangladesh. It covers various issues ranging from disproportionate vulnerability, coping and adaptation mechanisms for women, limitations for promoting participation and involvement of women in the decision-making process both in family and community and changes in the role and responsibilities of women for reducing disaster risk and vulnerability. It contributes to the deconstruction of gender-based identity by addressing women's changing practices and roles in the coastal area in terms of the involvement of women with the development process, earning/income generation activities, decision-making process, access and entitlements to resources. This book presents the most current and inclusive circumstances of disaster and women of the coastal area in Bangladesh. The insights obtained through the eyes of a sociologist from a holistic perspective make this book different and unique. The book is of interest to researchers, academics, policymakers and professionals engaged in the social understanding of disaster studies, as well as to researchers and practitioners in interdisciplinary domains, including sociology, gender studies, social work, environmental studies, and development studies.

This book is the final outcome of a research project conducted by the author under the Bangladesh Film Archive Fellowship 2019-2020. The research has aimed to investigate the political cinema produced in Bangladesh during the 1970s, to understand how these films worked as the language of protest in the critical socio-political conditions of that time and to study the ways that these films are informed by the aesthetics of Third Cinema. In doing so, this research examines two films produced in two different political periods in post-independence Bangladesh—Abar Tora Manush Ho (1973) directed by Khan Ataur Rahman and Rupali Shoikotey (1979) directed by Alamgir Kabir. Through textual analysis of the films, the research finds that by being slightly indirect in representation, certain politically conscious films of Bangladesh worked as strong languages of protest and voiced important messages against the social and political problems in the existing system. With intense political content and transformation of traditional cinema techniques, the films express a notable harmony with Third Cinema.
