Helsinki is one of the world's most northerly capitals, but it is by no means a city frozen in northern wastes. Situated along the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, magnificent lakes and forests reach into Helsinki's urban heart, a rare event in today's world of suburban sprawl. The city’s natural beauty, emphasized by parks and islands, is matched by an extraordinary cultural richness, the result of fruitful foreign influences and home-grown creativity. The Finnish capital offers a spectacular display of architecture and design: from the neoclassical magnificence imposed by a Russian Czar to the modernist chic of Nordic functionalism. Neil Kent explores the history and culture of the Daughter of the Baltic, a small fishing village that became a powerhouse of design and technology. Tracing its dramatic past of conflict and conflagration, he explores the evolution of a national, and urban, identity through architecture, art and writing. Through such differing cultural phenomena as saunas, railway stations and tango, he explains why Helsinki is a distinctive mix of tradition and innovation. • The city of architects and designers: Engel, Czar Alexander I and the creation of an imperial metropolis; Alvar Aaalto and the birth of the modern; functionalism and high-tech innovation. • The city of music and the arts: Sibelius, the national composer; conductors and performers; art galleries and installations; National Romanticism and the Nordic aesthetic. • The city of hospitality: Art Nouveau hotels and cafes; sauna culture; famous visitors and refugees: Lenin and Hitler; multicultural Helsinki and a history of migration.

Helsinki Pioneers Of Modernism written by Jonathan Moorhouse and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Architecture categories.

Famous for modern architecture, Finland drew inspiration from its pioneers of modernism 1930-55. Particularly in Helsinki these masterpieces articulated a youthful and vigorous city, complementing the archipelago's historic centre. After World War II, heroic Finland was extensively rebuilt. Finland sprang to the world's attention in art and design. In the figure of Alvar Aalto and other dynamic architects, the nation was seen as an international leader for modern architecture. Many young architects from abroad, including the author, were attracted to Helsinki to share this excellence and optimism. Spurred by the Olympic Games in 1952, architectural competitions, international fairs and travel, Helsinki's iconic buildings are a joy to discover either on foot or by tram. Moorhouse's personal guide offers the visitor glimpses into this varied, cultivated, public and intimate city with 98 choice pencil drawings.

Memories Of My Town written by Åström Anna-Maria and has been published by BoD - Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-15 with Travel categories.

The volume Memories of my Town is an exploration into how town dwellers experience their environment in a complicated way .As people in urban milieus relate themselves to the environment, this takes place on many levels, where especially the time level becomes problematic. The urban buildings and settings can be looked upon as a kind of collective history, as carriers or witnesses of times past. But it is only the town dwellers that experience urban time itself, the time they live in, but through their memories also times past. In this past some elements take symbolicaly dense expressions. Through reliving and narrating their experiences the symbolically important factors in the this urban relationship will be outlined for investigations conserning three towns, Helsinki, the capital, Viborg, the ceded and lost Carelian town, and Jyväskylä, a town with dense commercial and civilisatory dimensions in the middle of Finland. The symbolic aspects are the kern in all the articles of the book Memories of my Town. The aim of the book and its articles has been to use different theoretical concepts as guidelines in analysing the different narrative texts. Thus the articles are to be seen as independent contributions to the scientific discussion about places, urbanism, memories and narratives. The ethnological outlook is on the other hand an outcome of the joint project Town Dwellers and their Places., whereby the articles substancially relate to one another. Thus the book can also be seen as a joint result of this urban project, which was sponsored by the Finnish Academy.
