Siberia and the Far East have a special role in the study of viral encephalitis and hemorrhagic fevers, taking into account also discovery in the Far East (1936-1938) of tick-borne encephalitis (TE), Japanese (mosquito) encephalitis (JE), and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (Far Eastern hemorrhagic nephrosonephritis). The discovery in Siberia of Omsk hemorrhagic fever (OHF) which is similar to but not identical to tick-borne encephalitis (1946-1948) was of great importance for development of the problem of arbovirus infection. The report presents brief characteristics of basic directions which have been determined for future investigations of regional epidemiology and prophylactic measures against the mentioned infections in Siberia and the Far East. The last 20 years has seen a rapid increase in infectious diseases, particularly those that are termed "emerging diseases" such as SARS, "neglected diseases" such as malaria and those that are deemed biothreats such as anthrax. It is well-recognized that the most effective modality for preventing infectious diseases is vaccination. This book provides researchers with a better understanding of what is currently known about these diseases, including whether there is a vaccine available or under development. It also informs readers of the key issues in development of a vaccine for each disease. Provides a comprehensive treatise of the agents that are responsible for emerging and neglected diseases and those that can be used as biothreats Includes the processes such as the vaccine development pathway, vaccine manufacturing and regulatory issues that are critical to the generation of these vaccines to the marketplace Each chapter will include a map of the world showing where that particular disease is naturally found

Vascular Responses to Pathogens focuses on the growing research from leaders in the field for both the short and long-term impact of pathogens on the vasculature. It discusses various organisms, including bacteria, parasites, and viruses, and their role in key events leading to vascular disease. Formatted to discuss the topic of the interaction of pathogens with the vascular rather than individual diseases described separately, this reference demonstrates that common mechanisms are at play in many different diseases because they have a similar context, their vasculature. This all-inclusive reference book is a must-have tool for researchers and practicing clinicians in the areas of vascular biology, microvasculature, cardiology, and infectious disease. Covers a wide spectrum of organisms and provides analysis of pathogens and current therapeutic strategies in the context of their vasculature Provides detailed perspectives on key components contributing to vascular pathogens from leaders in the field Interfaces between both vascular biology and microbiology by encompassing information on how pathogens affect both macro and microvasculature Includes coverage of the clinical aspects of sepsis and current therapeutic strategies and anti-sepsis drugs

Zoonotic Viruses of Northern Eurasia: Taxonomy and Ecology provides a review of modern data of the taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of zoonotic viruses in the ecosystems of Northern Eurasia. With climate changes, increasing population density of arthropod vectors and vertebrate hosts, development of unused lands, transferences of viruses by birds, bats, infected humans, and animals, vectors allow virus populations to adapt to the new environment. This leads to the appearance of emerging or re-emerging infections. This book presents data about circulation and evolution of influenza viruses, tick-borne encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, hantaviruses, Sindbis virus, California encephalitis group viruses and other pathogenic viruses as well as of novel viruses classified for the first time using next-generation sequence. Features summarized data about the circulation of approximately 80 viruses isolated in natural foci of Northern Eurasia Provides descriptions of the main ecosystems of Northern Eurasia in the context of the ecology of viruses with environmental factors Delineates the potential impact of climate change for the distribution of viruses Includes virus taxonomy, ecology, distribution and pathogenicity for humans and animals

A single tick bite can have debilitating consequences. Lyme disease is the most common disease carried by ticks in the United States, and the number of those afflicted is growing steadily. If left untreated, the diseases carried by ticks-known as tick-borne diseases-can cause severe pain, fatigue, neurological problems, and other serious health problems. The Institute of Medicine held a workshop October 11-12, 2010, to examine the state of the science in Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.
