A Contrived Countryside written by Keith Hoggart and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-26 with Political Science categories.

This book shows how governance regimes before the 1970s suppressed rural prospects of housing improvement and created conditions for middle-class capture. Using original archival sources to reveal the intricacies of local and national policy processes, weak rural housing performances are shown to owe more to national governance regimes than local under-performance. Looking `behind the scenes' at policy processes highlights neglected principles in national governance, and shows how investigating rural housing is fundamental to understanding the national scene. With original insights and a new analytical perspective, this volume offers evidence and conclusions that challenge mainstream assumptions in public policy, housing, rural studies and planning.

Discreet Indiscretions written by Jörg R. Bergmann and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Social Science categories.

Although discourse theory tends to draw upon lofty examples, Discreet Indiscretions draws instead on one many consider inconsequential. Bergmann treats daily gossip, both friendly and malicious, as the genre of everyday communication and thereby in need of serious analysis. Utilizing discourse theory and ethnomethodology, this study shifts among several kinds of terrain: the sociology of language, the sociology of knowledge, and the sociology of culture. It rests on widespread individual observations on gossip in the existing literature of social science and on the investigation of real gossip recorded in conversations in the field, and reproduced here as transcribed segments. By exploring the complex relations of friendship and loyalty with respect to transmitting knowledge about the personal affairs of others, he develops his thesis: that gossip should be defined not as a control mechanism, but rather as the social organization of discreet indiscretions.

This work maps the cultural and physical divisions of medieval England. It concentrates on the level of hierarchy immediately above individual local societies, using detailed case studies of networks of linked communities in the East Midlands, the South and East Anglia. The societies studied are respectively on the periphery of a "cultural province", central to another such province and linked closely to a major urban centre. The text is a synthesis of modern continental historical scholarship, social anthropological and geographical techniques, and English medieval history. Included in the investigations are findings about the role of women in defining the sense of local community during the medieval period.

Inspired by the work of world-renowned anthropologist Marilyn Strathern, this collection of essays features contributions from a range of internationally recognized scholars – including Strathern herself – which examine a range of methodologies and approaches to the anthropology of knowledge. The book investigates the production of knowledge through a variety of themes, centered on the question of the researcher’s obligations and the requirements of knowledge. These range from the obligation to connect with local culture and existing anthropological knowledge, to the need to draw conclusions and circulate what has been learned. Taking up themes that are relevant for anthropology as a whole – particularly the topic of knowledge and the ethics of knowing others, as well as the notion of the local in a global world – Knowledge and Ethics in Anthropology is key reading for students and scholars alike. A thorough introduction to the key concepts and terms used in Strathern’s work is provided, making this a fantastic resource for anyone encountering her work for the first time.
