Au pied des Carpates, il existe une petite localité roumaine qui arbore fièrement son nom de baptême à la consonance bien française : " Ville Berthelot ". Sur le mur de la mairie, une plaque de marbre blanc, apposée sur la façade extérieure, rappelle que le 28 janvier 2001, à l'occasion du 70e anniversaire de la mort du général français, on y a célébré la mémoire de ce héros que la France lui avait envoyé pour sauver la Roumanie en 1916. Quelques semaines plus tôt, à l'occasion d'un référendum local, Unirea - c'est l'appellation que Ceausescu lui avait donné en 1965 - avait décidé de reprendre le nom de Général Berthelot que ses habitants lui avaient donné en 1923 et qui avait fait sa fierté depuis lors, abandonnant l'ancienne appellation de Farcadin de Sus. A cette époque, toute la Roumanie fêtait ce héros de la Grande Guerre familier de Joffre, du roi Ferdinand Ier de Roumanie et de son épouse Marie, que sa " Grande soeur " de l'autre bout de l'Europe lui avait envoyé à la tête d'une mission militaire pour permettre de résister aux troupes austro-allemandes et ainsi donner naissance à la Grande Roumanie. Après un travail minutieux de plus de 10 ans, entre la France et la Roumanie, Jean-Noël Grandhomme a patiemment reconstitué l'itinéraire hors du commun de ce général trop peu connu en France mais auquel les Roumains vouent un véritable culte. Grâce à un important travail documentaire, mené avec toute la rigueur scientifique de l'auteur, on pourra découvrir la vie d'Henri-Mathias Berthelot, libérateur de la Roumanie mais aussi vainqueur à Verdun à la tête du 32e corps lors de la reprise de Mort homme. Une plongée fascinante au coeur de l'Empire français entre Indochine et Algérie, mais aussi dans l'Europe centrale de la première guerre, quand la diplomatie côtoie l'art de la guerre.

At the beginning of the First World War, Henri Mathias Berthelot was recognized as one of France's most brilliant young generals. His sharp intelligence, prodigious organizational talents, and verbal skills had made him the trusted assistant to a succession of French chiefs of staff including Brugere, Lacroix, and finally Joffre. As the latter's "right arm" in implementing Plan XVII in 1914, he shared responsibility for the earliest defeats of the French Army, but also for the remarkable recovery that followed. After the war, he played an influential role on the Conseil Superieure de Guerre in its debates over the defense of France which eventually produced the Maginot Line. While, unfortunately, Berthelot's military career in France has not received the attention it deserves, his service in Romania as head of two French military missions (October 1916-March 1918) and (October 1918-May 1919) made him a national hero in that country. Berthelot's indomitable optimism and will to resist energized the Romanian political and military leadership: the Romanian army was rebuilt, a new Austro-German assault brilliantly repulsed in 1917, and the consequences of the Russian Revolution for Romania blunted. At the end of the war, when Allied leaders vacillated over allowing the Romanians to occupy the territory promised in the Treaty of Alliance of 1916, Berthelot encouraged them to act on their own. His advocacy of Romania's territorial claims alienated his superiors and eventually led to his recall. Meanwhile, in Romania he was enshrined as one of the founders of "Greater Romania." This study by Glenn E. Torrey, the leading American specialist on Romania during World War I, is based on the private, unpublished "Sourvenirs," papers, and correspondence of the General.
