Henri Michaux is both a recognised poet and visual artist, arguably one of the greatest 'double artists' of the twentieth century. This book presents the first detailed examination of a particular interdisciplinary aspect of his production, namely, the innovative experimentation with signs contained in four works: Mouvements, Par la voie des rythmes, Saisir and Par des traits. Questions arise concerning their literary and visual status as, in their attempt to render interior rhythm and dynamism, they occupy an interstitial space between writing and drawing, between the book and the canvas, between the Western alphabet and Chinese characters. This study addresses these questions by analysing the conception, production and reception of Michaux's signs and the literary and artistic contexts in which they were produced.

Comment le visuel est-il représenté dans l'oeuvre de Henri Michaux ? Cette étude se propose de mesurer le pouvoir performatif qui travaille à constituer le visuel par les mots. Les textes analysés ici sont regroupés en trois étapes : la première, placée sous l'égide de l'ekphrasis, s'occupe des textes écrits en réaction à des dessins ou à des tableaux réels et fictifs ; la seconde problématise l'ambition mimétique dans les textes des expériences hallucinogènes ; la troisième considère le visuel dans les textes assemblés autour de l'échange entre l'activité du poète et celle du peintre. Secret, beyond classification, elusive: these judgements are frequently penned by commentators of the poet and essayist of Belgian origin, Henri Michaux, to the point that his readers have been deprived of a better understanding of his work and historical impact.In order to get beyond this impasse, it is necessary to situate the author and his work in the literature of his time. One thus discovers a Michaux very different from that of legend: quick to talk about his era, attentive to the literature of his contemporaries and anxious to differentiate himself from them. Confronted by such a gap between a period and later critical comments on it, we have wanted to understand what made possible the emergence and imposition of this critical reception. The investigation has not confined itself to a discourse analysis applied to the poet, but has also taken into account Michaux's interventions. One thus sees how, from the Liberation onwards, and in a context of heightened politicization, Michaux worked to make himself elusive. Covering the first decades of Michaux's literary career, this study shows in what circumstances a poet who wanted to situate himself in the literature of his time became progressively elusive. As the figure of Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) becomes so entrenched in the Modernist canon that he serves as a major reference point for poets and critics alike, the time has come to investigate poetry and poetics after him. The ambiguity of the preposition is intentional: while after may refer neutrally to chronological sequence, it also implies ways of aesthetically modeling poetry on a predecessor. Likewise, the general heading of poetry and poetics allows the sixteen contributors to this volume to range far and wide in terms of poetics (from postwar formalists to poets associated with various strands of Postmodernism, Language poetry, even Confessional poetry), ethnic identities (with a diverse selection of poets of color), nationalities (including the Irish Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney and several English poets), or language (sidestepping into French and Czech poetry). Besides offering a rich harvest of concrete case studies, Poetry and Poetics after Wallace Stevens also reconsiders possibilities for talking about poetic influence. How can we define and refine the ways in which we establish links between earlier and later poems? At what level of abstraction do such links exist? What have we learned from debates about competing poetic eras and traditions? How is our understanding of an older writer reshaped by engaging with later ones? And what are we perhaps not paying attention to-aesthetically, but also politically, historically, thematically-when we relate contemporary poetry to someone as idiosyncratic as Stevens?

The work of French writer and essayist Maurice Blanchot (1907-2003) is without doubt among the most challenging the twentieth century has to offer. Contemporary debate in literature, philosophy, and politics has yet to fully acknowledge its discreet but enduring impact. Arising from a conference that took place in Oxford in 2009, this book sets itself a simple, if daunting, task: that of measuring the impact and responding to the challenge of Blanchot's work by addressing its engagement with the Romantic legacy, in particular (but not only) that of the Jena Romantics. Drawing upon a wide range of philosophers and poets associated directly or indirectly with German Romanticism (Kant, Fichte, Goethe, Jean Paul, Novalis, the Schlegels, Hölderlin), the authors of this volume explore how Blanchot's fictional, critical, and fragmentary texts rewrite and rethink the Romantic demand in relation to questions of criticism and reflexivity, irony and subjectivity, narrative and genre, the sublime and the neutre, the Work and the fragment, quotation and translation. Reading Blanchot with or against key twentieth-century thinkers (Benjamin, Foucault, de Man), they also examine Romantic and post-Romantic notions of history, imagination, literary theory, melancholy, affect, love, revolution, community, and other central themes that Blanchot's writings deploy across the century from Jean-Paul Sartre to Jean-Luc Nancy.
