In this study, author Nancy A. Mace rectifies the lack of scholarly attention given Henry Fielding's use of the classical tradition in his novels, periodical essays, and miscellaneous writings. Although scholars have extensively studied the affinities between Henry Fielding's novels and such modern genres as the romance, travel literature, and criminal biography, they have paid surprisingly little attention to his use of the classical tradition in developing both his narrative theory and practice.

Now best known for three great novels - Tom Jones, Joseph Andrews and Amelia - Henry Fielding (1707–54) was one of the most controversial figures of his time. Prominent first as a playwright, then as a novelist and political journalist, and finally as a justice of peace, Fielding made a substantial contribution to eighteenth-century culture, and was hugely influential in the development of the novel as a form, both in Britain and more widely in Europe. This collection of specially-commissioned essays by leading scholars describes and analyses the many facets of Fielding's work in theatre, fiction, journalism and politics. In addition it assesses his unique contribution to the rise of the novel as the dominant literary form, the development of the law, and the political and literary culture of eighteenth-century Britain. Including a chronology and guide to further reading, this volume offers a comprehensive account of Fielding's life and work.

The new series of Writers and Their Work continues a tradition of innovative critical studies introducing writers and their contexts to a wide range of readers. Drawing upon the most recent thinking in English studies, each book considers biographical material, examines recent criticism, includes a detailed bibliography, and offers a concise but challenging reappraisal of a writer's major work. This study offers a fresh introduction to the achievement of Henry Fielding as dramatist, journalist and novelist. In his day Fielding was always a centre of controversy, attacked as immoral, yet praised for his realistic portrayal of contemporary society and his attack on hypocrisy and exploitation. Jenny Uglow sets Fielding in the light of recent critical debates and places him in the context of his age; identifying central ideas on judgement, mercy and benevolence, tracing the development of his craft and clarifying his ideas on comedy and the role of the novel, particularly in rivalry with Samuel Richardson. Reading of key works - Tom Jones, Shamela, Joseph Andrews, Jonathan Wild and Amelia - are enriched by studies of his drama and of lesser known works such as A Journey from this World to the Next, and by reference to Fielding's essays, journalism, politics and work as a pioneering magistrate in London. Fielding emerges as a writer of startling originality, constantly adapting traditional forms to new ends, whose fiercely ironic analysis of gender, power and language is combined with a comedy at once critical and humane.

Novel Cleopatras written by Nicole Horejsi and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-20 with History categories.

Advocating a revised history of the eighteenth-century novel, Novel Cleopatras showcases the novel's origins in ancient mythology, its relation to epic narrative, and its connection to neoclassical print culture. Novel Cleopatras also rewrites the essential role of women writers in history who were typically underestimated as active participants of neoclassical culture, often excluded from the same schools that taught their brothers Greek and Latin. However, as author Nicole Horejsi reveals, a number of exceptional middle-class women were actually serious students of the classics. In order to dismiss the idea that women were completely marginalized as neoclassical writers, Horejsi takes up the character of Dido from ancient Greek mythology and her real-life counterpart Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. Together, the legendary Dido and historical Cleopatra serve as figures for the conflation of myth and history. Horejsi contends that turning to the doomed queens who haunted the Roman imagination enabled eighteenth-century novelists to seize the productive overlap among the categories of history, romance, the novel, and even the epic.

"In the landscape of the early modern European comic novel the inn often features as a monument to digression - the perfect setting for chance encounters with strangers who always have a story to tell. This wide-ranging comparative study explores the special part played by the inn, tracing the progress of a succession of wayward heroes and narrators in five canonical texts: Cervantes's ""Don Quijote"", Scarron's ""Roman comique"", Fielding's ""Joseph Andrews"" and ""Tom Jones"", Sterne's ""Tristram Shandy"" and Diderot's ""Jacques le fataliste"". As this celebration of digressive fiction unfolds, a very different picture emerges of the novel's rise and development."
