In Graduating Class, Latty L. Goodwin tells the story of a group of students from poor and working-class families who struggle against all odds to graduate from an elite university. The author explores the lived experiences of an engaging group of college students and shares their stories of trials and tribulations, joys and sorrows, and their frustrations and successes. Goodwin shows that even though the affirmative action debate was recently "settled" in the Supreme Court, universities are still left to grapple with defining who is deserving, meritorious, and qualified for admission. This timely story of hope and of students persevering through academic adversity poignantly demonstrates the justice of democratic access to higher education.

Rochester Institute of Technology's story now encompasses some 175 years of commitment to higher education. Almost uniquely among American universities, RIT has focused on educating a skilled workforce to support advancements in the industrialization and modernization of America. From its beginnings in 1829, when it harnessed the energy of a young city in upstate New York, through stunningly effective mergers and nimble responses to new technologies, RIT has evolved into a respected model in innovative higher education. In this new and enlarged edition of his original history of RIT (1982), Professor Gordon brings the university's fascinating chronicle up to date. RIT has enjoyed tremendous growth over the past 25 years, and readers will enjoy anecdotes on student life, insights into major initiatives, and an objective look at the tough decisions that have guided RIT into the company of the highest-ranking academic institutions in the United States. This book is of certain interest for urban and technological historians, college administrators nationwide, and especially RIT's own growing community of students, employees, supporters, and alumni.

How College Works written by Daniel F. Chambliss and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-17 with Education categories.

Constrained by shrinking budgets, can colleges do more to improve the quality of education? And can students get more out of college without paying higher tuition? Daniel Chambliss and Christopher Takacs conclude that limited resources need not diminish the undergraduate experience. How College Works reveals the decisive role that personal relationships play in determining a student's success, and puts forward a set of small, inexpensive interventions that yield substantial improvements in educational outcomes. At a liberal arts college in New York, the authors followed nearly one hundred students over eight years. The curricular and technological innovations beloved by administrators mattered much less than did professors and peers, especially early on. At every turning point in undergraduate lives, it was the people, not the programs, that proved critical. Great teachers were more important than the topics studied, and just two or three good friendships made a significant difference academically as well as socially. For most students, college works best when it provides the daily motivation to learn, not just access to information. Improving higher education means focusing on the quality of relationships with mentors and classmates, for when students form the right bonds, they make the most of their education.

Creating A College That Works written by Grace G. Roosevelt and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-11 with Education categories.

In 1964 educational activist Audrey Cohen and her colleagues developed a unique curricular structure that enables urban college students to integrate their academic studies with meaningful work in community settings. Creating a College That Works chronicles Cohen's efforts to create an innovative educational model that began with the Women's Talent Corps, evolvied into the College for Human Services, and finally became, in 2002, what is now Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY), a fully accredited institution of higher education that offers bachelor's and master's degrees. Focusing her attention on the major players in the development of MCNY, Grace G. Roosevelt provides a ringside seat during the years of turbulence, hope, and innovation in the 1960s and '70s. She captures the life of a visionary educational leader while situating Cohen's ideas within the history of progressive education. Cohen and her colleagues, facing great opposition, petitioned and marched, and were harassed and rebuffed. But they persevered, and today the college they founded continues to graduate hundreds of students dedicated to improving their communities, workplaces, and schools in the New York metropolitan area. Woven throughout the narrative are the changing dynamics of the civil rights movement, questions about women's leadership roles, and stories of how adults have transformed their lives through Cohen's innovative educational model.
