Personal accounts of adultery, cruelty, desertion and nullity fill this exposition of divorce and separation in Scotland in the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Leah Leneman brings vividly to life the marriages and affairs, loves and hates, tenderness and harshness experienced by men and women whose marriages broke down in this period. Their stories, told in their own words, come from the entire spectrum of Scottish society, from the aristocracy to the 'common' people. Contrary to popular belief, divorce and legal separation were available on equal terms to men and women in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Scotland. Alienated Affections offers an overall picture of this phenomenon, richly illustrated by the experiences of individuals.

This psychological mystery goes to the heart of alienation. When seasoned forensic psychologist Dr. Calder Miro agreed to help his friend, homicide detective Kenilworth Brown, investigate the apparent murder of another psychologist, he didn't expect to find himself confronting a past high conflict divorce case. It was a case that still troubled him, one in which the murder victim had been on the opposing side. Alienation of Affection takes Calder, a white male, and Worth, a black male, both raised in the South, through an examination of their friendship as they probe into a maelstrom of madness and murder. The body of child psychologist Mildred Hughes is found floating in the waters of Ocracoke island, just off the North Carolina coast. While investigating multiple suspects, Calder and Worth are confronted with another brutal murder committed with grisly sophistication in New Bern, North Carolina. This novel is a complex tale of Southern family dysfunction and the unintentional destruction of two children's psyches. The story examines the ripple effect of anger-driven family law litigation, denial of a father's presence in his children's lives for a decade, the vengeance agenda of a disordered, Bible-pounding mother, and the paths of disturbed adolescence.

Parental alienation is an important phenomenon that mental health professionals should know about and thoroughly understand, especially those who work with children, adolescents, divorced adults, and adults whose parents divorced when they were children. In this book, the authors define parental alienation as a mental condition in which a child - usually one whose parents are engaged in a high-conflict divorce - allies himself or herself strongly with one parent (the preferred parent) and rejects a relationship with the other parent (the alienated parent) without legitimate justification. This process leads to a tragic outcome when the child and the alienated parent, who previously had a loving and mutually satisfying relationship, lose the nurture and joy of that relationship for many years and perhaps for their lifetimes. We estimate that 1 percent of children and adolescents in the U.S. experience parental alienation. When the phenomenon is properly recognized, this condition is preventable and treatable in many instances. The authors of this book believe that parental alienation is not simply a minor aberration in the life of a family, but a serious mental condition. Because of the false belief that the alienated parent is a dangerous or unworthy person, the child loses one of the most important relationships in his or her life. This book contains much information about the validity, reliability, and prevalence of parental alienation. It also includes a comprehensive international bibliography regarding parental alienation with more than 600 citations. In order to bring life to the definitions and the technical writing, several short clinical vignettes have been included. These vignettes are based on actual families and real events, but have been modified to protect the privacy of both the parents and children.
