Deborah Ellis, activist and award-winning author of The Breadwinner interviews young people involved in the criminal justice system and lets them tell their own stories. Jamar found refuge in a gang after leaving an abusive home where his mother stole from him. Fred was arrested for assault with a weapon, public intoxication and attacking his mother while on drugs. Jeremy first went to court at age fourteen (“Court gives you the feeling that you can never make up for what you did, that you’re just bad forever”) but now wears a Native Rights hat to remind him of his strong Métis heritage. Kate, charged with petty theft and assault, finally found a counselor who treated her like a person for the first time. Many readers will recognize themselves, or someone they know, somewhere in these stories. Being lucky or unlucky after making a mistake. The encounter with a mean cop or a good one. Couch-surfing, or being shunted from one foster home to another. The kids in this book represent a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations and ethnicities. Every story is different, but there are common threads — loss of parenting, dislocation, poverty, truancy, addiction, discrimination. The book also includes the points of view of family members as well as “voices of experience” — adults looking back at their own experiences as young offenders. Most of all, this book leaves readers asking the most pressing questions of all. Does it make sense to put kids in jail? Can’t we do better? Have we forgotten that we were once teens ourselves, feeling powerless to change our lives, confused about who we were and what we wanted, and quick to make a move without a thought for the consequences? Thousands of newcomers are pouring into Alberta from around the globe, bringing unexpected gifts. Many are writers and storytellers. What pulls them to Canada? What happens to them on the journey? What experiences have they deliberately left behind? What treasures do they bring? How do they describe their emerging sense of place and their creative aspirations in a new home? In this moving collection of stories and poems, writers from around the world share their thoughts on creating a life in Alberta. Expressed with beauty and clarity, and sometimes translated from the writer's native tongue, these very personal accounts of joy and sadness, regret and humour, homesickness and exuberance, describe the defining moments of a departure and an arrival. Social and emotional learning is at the heart of good teaching, but as standards and testing requirements consume classroom time and divert teachers' focus, these critical skills often get sidelined. In Sharing the Blue Crayon , Mary Anne Buckley shows teachers how to incorporate social and emotional learning into a busy day and then extend these skills to literacy lessons for young children. Through simple activities such as read-alouds, sing-alongs, murals, and performances, students learn how to get along in a group, empathize with others, develop self-control, and give and receive feedback, all while becoming confident readers and writers. As Buckley shares, Every day we ask young children to respectfully converse, question, debate, and collaborate about literature, science, math problems, history, and more. That's sophisticated stuff and requires sophisticated skills. Social and emotional skills are essential to helping children communicate their knowledge and articulate their questions. We must teach students how to build respectful, caring classroom communities, where students are supported and fully engaged in the learning and everyone can reach their potential.- In this fresh and original book, Buckley captures the humor, wonder, honesty, and worries of our youngest learners and helps teachers understand how to harness their creativity and guide their conversations toward richer expressions of knowledge. Teachers of special populations will especially appreciate Buckley's successful strategies for reaching English language learners and children from high-poverty homes who may not have strong foundations for academic discourse. As Buckley reminds us, By understanding one another-;orally and socially at first, then using those community-building exchanges to strengthen the skills of reading and writing-;we experience the authentic pride and sweet joys of learning, understanding, and connecting to one another.-

Things are going quite well for Elliot and Razor until someone frames Razor for a rape and murder. All of their friends on the police force turn against them. Razor is convicted and sent to prison for life while Elliot takes over their criminal operation. A few days later, Elliot returns to his office suite and finds a stranger. At the point of Elliot's bodyguard's gun and the threat of death, the stranger states he is Elliot's old friend, Razor. After hours of interrogation, Elliot, still skeptical, must agree the stranger knows too much about Elliot and their lives to be anyone else. The stranger tells Elliot about being in prison and approached by one of the inmates with a proposal to provide Razor with an escape and a fool-proof new identity for twenty-five percent of Razor's Cincinnati operation. Elliot purposely commits a brazen daylight murder with plenty of witnesses, allows the police to arrest him and the court to convict him. This time, Razor has the prison watched and when Elliot escapes, they follow him all the way to a small coastal town in North Carolina. Elliot undergoes the transformation to a new identity and returns to Razor in Cincinnati. This is when the plan falls apart. E-mail your opinions of this book to [email protected].

When Dr. David Lemon began his great adventure as a cardiologist in the Midwest, he and his colleagues agreed that anyone over the age of seventy was over the hill. Then a funny thing happened as time went on and patients in his office lived longer than ever before. Dr. Lemon discovered that seventy was not so old after all. Determined to learn what makes people greater than ninety years old tick, Dr. Lemon asked over one hundred and twenty senior citizens about their secrets for longevity and happiness, and recorded their enlightening responses over a four-year period. Happy to oblige, his interviewees share their views about what it takes to be ninety years old, how they got there, what their values are, and what life lessons we all can learn from their experience and successes. Some of their secrets include retaining a love for life, a zeal for new adventures, and a need to be relevant. While revealing their joys, failures, and frustrations, the participants shine a light on their courage, optimism, ability to laugh at themselves, and determination to always persevere. Im Still Here provides an illuminating glimpse into what it is like to age in twenty-first century America, ultimately proving that the circle through life is definitely a journey worth taking.
