Los trabajos reunidos en la colección HISTORIA DE LOS MOVIMIENTOS SOCIALES tienen un protagonista: las masas. El análisis de .los movimientos socia- les ha impulsado el desarrollo de una disciplina -la historia social- ritualmente invocada, a partir de 1930, como parte de la «historia económica y socia». Esta rama histórica se ha convertido en campo privilegiado de convergencia de la antropología, la sociología y la historia. Su metodología ofrece la variedad y amplitud propias de una disciplina en rápida gestación, nutrida por polémicas fructíferas. «El coloquio "Herejías y sociedades" [...] debe ser una reflexión colectiva sobre el fenómeno herético, ilustrada con ejemplos presentados por las personalidades participantes sobre un tema que entre más especialmente en su competencia. En primer lugar, debe esforzarse p()r contestar a la pregunta "¿ Qué es un hereje?", pero desde el principio debe partir del hecho de que no hay hereje aislado. Aunque protestatario, el hereje está siempre inmerso en un grupo. Intentaremos, pues, determinar en primer lugar la importancia de los niveles, de los grados donde captamos al hereje. "' 1.° ¿Cae el hereje dentro de una cierta psicología, incluso de una cierta patología mental? ¿Es el hereje un anormal, un neurótico? 2.° ¿Qué relaciones mantiene el hereje con1a mentalidad colectiva? ¿Es un ser aislado, que escapa a esa mentalidad rechazándola, o, ál contrario, es su intérprete más exigente, intransigente, un extremista del todo o hada, la encarnación en estado puro de la mentalidad colectiva más o menos degradada en la masa ortodoxa? 3.° ¿Cómo se comporta este rebelde con respecto á las diversas formas de organización social de las que forma parte: su clase social de origen y las colectividades en las que está obligado a integrarse en cuanto hereje? ¿Es el hereje un producto de clase? ¿No se expresa realmente la herejía más que en una secta? ¿Cuál es la originalidad del grupo herético en cuanto grupo social? ¿Qué representa una Iglesia herética? Sin embargo; el objeto del coloquio consiste sobre todo en estudiar el papel del hereje, su función en la sociedad: el hereje en acción dentro del proceso histórico. Para ello, se ha escogido un marco Geográfico y cronológico. El área espacial es Europa, y mas precisamente la Europa cristiana, campo de herejías opuestas a un mismo sistema religioso: el cristianismo. El espacio temporal es el período que se extiende desde el año l000, comienzo de la explosión de las herejías de masas en Occidente, hasta finales del siglo XVIII cuando, al dejar de ser: predominante el cristianismo, la herejía pierde su carácter de contestación de la ideología dominante.»
