Eine Literaturgeschichte des exorbitanten Heros, die unser Sprechen über Helden heute auf eine neue Grundlage stellt. Das Buch zeichnet eine Geschichte der abendländischen Vorstellung von Heldentum nach, die bislang ungeschrieben ist. Es zeigt, inwiefern die Vorstellung von einem Helden, wie sie in der antiken und mittelalterlichen Heldenepik geprägt worden war, in Moderne und Gegenwart wirksam geblieben ist. Die Beiträge des Buches führen zunächst die heldenepische Vorstellung eines Helden vor, der durch menschliches Übermaß und soziale Destruktivität (Exorbitanz) charakterisiert ist (»Ilias«, »Beowulf«, »Nibelungenlied«, »Edda« und Sagas, »Chanson de Roland«, »Cid«). Daneben zeigen sie, wie schon in der Vormoderne an dieser Heldenvorstellung durch Anpassung an neue kulturelle Gegebenheiten, Übertragung in andere Diskurse oder Neukonzeption im Sinne geltender sozialer Normen gearbeitet worden ist (»Gilgamesch«, »Aeneis«, Judith-Erzählungen, Höfischer Roman). Zuletzt verfolgen sie, wie die Vorstellung des exorbitanten Helden in der neuzeitlichen Literatur sowie in Comic, Film und Computerspiel der Gegenwart fortlebt. Ziel dieser Literaturgeschichte ist es, der aktuellen Diskussion um die gesellschaftliche Re.levanz von Heldentum heute eine neue begriffliche Basis zu geben.

To mark the 200th anniversary of Schiller’s death, leading scholars from Germany, Canada, the UK and the USA have contributed to this volume of commemorative essays. These were first presented at a symposium held at the University of Birmingham in June 2005. The essays collected here shed important new light on Schiller’s standing as a national and transnational figure , both in his own lifetime and in the two hundred years since his death. Issues explored include: aspects of Schiller’s life and work which contributed to the creation of heroic and nationalist myths of the poet during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; his activities as man of the theatre and publisher in his own, pre-national context; the (trans-)national dimensions of Schiller’s poetic and dramatic achievement in their contemporary context and with reference to later appropriations of national(ist) elements in his work. There has been much debate over the relationship of Heidegger's philosophy—in particular his book Being and Time—to his practical involvement with National Socialism. Yet the question has never been addressed through a comparison of Being and Time with other texts on history and politics written at the time. Johannes Fritsche does this, providing a detailed interpretation of the relevant passages in Being and Time—especially sections 72-77 on fate, community, and society. He analyzes for comparison two other authors who explicitly regarded themselves as rightists—Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf) and Max Scheler (Formalism in Ethics and other writings)—and two authors on the left—Georg Lukács (History and Class Consciousness) and Paul Tillich (The Socialist Decision). Fritsche concludes that Being and Time is a brilliant summary of right-wing politics in general, which proposes the destruction of liberal society in order to regenerate an idealized community. In addition, Heidegger rejects positions on the right, such as Scheler's, that enabled their authors to distance themselves from the most extreme political rightists, and thus he paves the way for National Socialism. Being and Time, Fritsche demonstrates, must be seen as a clear case for the National Socialists and their project of revitalization of the Volksgemeinschaft, the community of the people.
