Los seres humanos no sabemos vivir sin héroes. Por lo menos desde la Grecia clásica, los héroes, reales o ficticios, así como sus oponentes los villanos, han acompañado a la humanidad a lo largo de los siglos y en contextos históricos muy diversos. No hace falta buscar en la historia: El personal sanitario y su abnegada lucha contra el coronavirus en unas condiciones radicalmente adversas nos ofrecen otro ejemplo de héroes y heroínas en la actualidad del siglo XXI. Esta inmutable pervivencia de los héroes (y, en mucha menor medida, de las heroínas) apunta a una constante antropológica de la naturaleza humana, que, en el transcurso del tiempo, ha ido incorporando al héroe y su culto en su ADN. Sin embargo, el estudio del héroe y de su oponente ha ocupado durante mucho tiempo solo un lugar marginal en las ciencias sociales. Tanto la funesta experiencia con los "héroes" totalitarios como el hecho de que el héroe, por definición, cuestiona el principio más sagrado de cualquier democracia, a saber: el principio de la igualdad, pueden explicar estas reticencias de analizar un fenómeno tan relevante no solo en la historia sino también en la política actual. Enlazando con el creciente interés por las construcciones simbólicas e imaginarias promovido por la historia cultural, y combinando el análisis de casos seleccionados con la reflexión teórica, este libro contribuye a mejorar el conocimiento sobre el complejo fenómeno de los héroes y los villanos, su creación, su socialización y su género, así como su funcionalidad.

This book explores the changing evolution of memory debates on places intimately linked to the lives and deaths of different fascist, para-fascist and communist dictators in a truly transnational and comparative way. During the second decade of the twenty-first century, a number of parallel debates arose in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Albania, Austria and other European countries regarding the public management by democratic regimes of those sites of memory that were directly linked to the personal biographies of their former dictators. The ways in which each democracy deals with the dead bodies, mausoleums and birthplaces of the dictators vary considerably, although common questions occur, such as whether oblivion or re-signification is better, the risk of a posthumous cult of personality being established and the extent to which the shadow of the authoritarian past endures in these sites of memory. Using the concept of "sites of the dictators", the author explains why it is so difficult to deal with some sites of memory linked to dead autocrats, as those places contribute directly or indirectly to humanizing them, making their remembrance more acceptable for the present and future generations, and discusses the potential of the "Europeanization" of these "dark" memories of the past. Exploring the imperatives of memory politics and how these are reconciled with local actors interested in exploiting the dictator’s remembrance, this book will be useful reading for students and scholars of history, politics and memory studies.

Desde el Departamento de Historia Contemporánea de la UNED se organizó a finales de noviembre de 2016 el «Congreso internacional nación y nacionalismo en la España de las autonomías». Contando con la presencia de especialistas de ámbitos histórico, jurídico, sociológico y politológico, se realizó entonces un análisis del proceso de transformación de la España del último medio siglo y de la trascendencia del modelo de organización territorial que supuso el desarrollo del Estado de las autonomías.
