Jahrhunderts, ihre Leistungen seien nicht "bedeutsamer" als die einer anderen Herzogin - das dynastische Denken der Herzogin bleibt uns fremd . Er bezeichnet sie als eine in allen ihren Facetten faszinierende Standesperson aus der Spätphase des Ancien Régime . BERGER ist in diesem Punkt uneingeschränkt zuzustimmen, denn der Braunschweiger Herzogin gelang es, sich durch ihre Hochzeit mit Ernst August II. Constantin im Jahr 1756, aber auch durch ihre eigene vormundschaftliche Regentschaft im Herzogtum Sachsen-Weimar zu etablieren und zu repräsentieren. Anna Amalia erhielt in ihrer Jugend eine fundierte Ausbildung zu einer Fürstentochter und wurde auf ihre zukünftigen Aufgaben am Hof vorbereitet: "Meine Erziehung zielte auf nichts weniger, als mich zu eine(r) Regentin zu bilden. Sie war, wie alle Fürstenkinder erzogen werden. [...]" . Als ihr Ehemann Ernst August II. Constantin bereits zwei Jahre nach der Hochzeit starb, musste Anna Amalia nun die vormundschaftliche Regentschaft für ihren minderjährigen Sohn Carl August übernehmen und die Regierungsgeschäfte führen. Bereits nach ihrer Hochzeit hatte Anna Amalia den Titel "regierende Herzogin" erhalten, aber bis zum Tod des Herzogs keinen politischen Einfluss gehabt. Nun wurde von der Regentin die "Bildung eines ideell und administrativ einheitlichen Staatswesens" erwartet. Das Testament Ernst August II. Constantins legte fest, dass die Herzogin bezüglich des Weimarer Staates zu bewahren und zu konsolidieren hatte . Auf einer breiten Quellenbasis korrigiert die Biographie nicht nur festgefügte Legenden zum deutschen 'Erinnerungsort' Weimar. Sie verknüpft zudem die Kulturgeschichte der 'Weimarer Klassik' mit der Hofforschung und der Geschlechtergeschichte der Aufklärung. Mit einer darstellerischen Trennung des Lebenslaufs in einzelne 'Rollen' erschließt die Studie der historischen Biographik auch methodisch neue Wege.
