Dit boek verscheen n.a.v. een gelijknamige tentoonstelling (Stedelijk Museum Leuven, 2001) op intiatief van de provincie Vlaams-Brabant. Het lijkt er wel op dat uitgeverijen mekaar de loef proberen af te steken met uitmuntende tentoonstellingscatalogen, echte pronkstukken met lees- en kijkgenot. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg zou zijn, wordt de catalogus ook meer en meer gebruikt om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te stimuleren en bij een groot publiek te verspreiden. Bovendien is dit een staaltje van vernieuwend onderzoek: in deze catalogus ligt het accent bij de diversiteit in regionale ontwikkelingen, zowel politiek, sociaal als economisch en demografisch. Het Hageland verschilt van het Pajottenland bijvoorbeeld.Vlaams-Brabant is bij uitstek een provincie met grote verschillen tussen platteland en stad, en met spin-offeffecten van de hoofdstad, zonder dat die er deel van uitmaakt. Het is een gebied met een zeer langzame industriële ontwikkeling, lange tijd agrarisch, met de bijbehorende thuis- en pendelarbeid. Het zijn regio's die sterk 'gekleurl' waren door politiek-economisch dominante groepen, die een aantal steden, zoals o.m. Tienen, inpalmden als liberale steden. Het syndicalisme, zowel het christelijke als het socialistische, kreeg slechts moeizaam voet aan de grond, zeker tot aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De Boerenbond bouwde zijn bastion te Leuven; andere middenstandsbonden volgden. Zij, evenals de katholieke kerk en de universiteit van Leuven, bepaalden grotendeels het sociaal-culturele leven van de regio.Het schema van de catalogus volgt dat van de tentoonstelling: een eerste deel gaat over de economische ontwikkeling van dit gebied in de 18e en 19e eeuw. Deze toont overduidelijk het belang van de infrastructuurwerken: kanalen, spoorwegen, tramlijnen, autowegen. Het geringe aantal verbindingswegen hield de regio's apart, onderling en van de rest van het land. Een tweede deel van het boek gaat over het sociale leven: een samenleving in de kering, tussen 1890 en 1950, waarbij nogmaals de verschillen tot uiting komen tussen het leven in de kern en de periferie, tussen arm en rijk.Het laatste deel van de catalogus brengt ons op vandaag: het is dankzij de Belgische expansiewetten en de steun van de Europese Gemeenschap dat bepaalde subregio's, zoals het Hageland, Zaventem en Halle, in de jaren 1960 een snelle ontwikkeling hebben gekend, zodanig zelfs dat Vlaams-Brabant in de jaren 1990 één van de belangrijkste economische groeipolen geworden is in Vlaanderen. Deze catalogus is duidelijk afgerond voor de neergang en het faillissement van Sabena in 2001. In dat derde deel komen ook uitgebreid onderwerpen aan bod zoals de strijd van de Vlamingen in de Rand van Brussel en de nieuwe sociale bewegingen in Vlaams-Brabant.Uitstekend wetenschappelijk werk, met af en toe een vreemd aandoende eenzijdigheid, zoals bv. in de beschrijving van de strijd voor het algemeen, enkelvoudig stemrecht, waarbij de overheid en sommige hogere instanties meer krediet krijgen dan ze verdienen. Ook vreemd is het feit dat vrouwen bijna onzichtbaar zijn, zowel op de tentoonstelling als in de catalogus. Met enkele paragrafen over de Socialistische Vooruitziende Vrouwen en het feminisme van de jaren 1970 moeten de Vlaams-Brabantse vrouwen tevreden zijn. Geen vernieuwing dus op dit gebied.De catalogus is een absolute aanrader voor een groot publiek, maar heel in het bijzonder voor scholen die bovendien voorzien worden van didactische mappen. Alle openbare bibliotheken zullen er plezier aan beleven. Dit is geschiedenis van hoog niveau, aantrekkelijk verpakt in geuren en kleuren. The Low Countries are famous for their radically changing landscape over the last 1,000 years. Like the landscape, the linguistic situation has also undergone major changes. In Holland, an early form of Frisian was spoken until, very roughly, 1100, and in parts of North Holland it disappeared even later. The hunt for traces of Frisian or Ingvaeonic in the dialects of the western Low Countries has been going on for around 150 years, but a synthesis of the available evidence has never appeared. The main aim of this book is to fill that gap. It follows the lead of many recent studies on the nature and effects of language contact situations in the past. The topic is approached from two different angles: Dutch dialectology, in all its geographic and diachronic variation, and comparative Germanic linguistics. In the end, the minute details and the bigger picture merge into one possible account of the early and high medieval processes that determined the make-up of western Dutch.
