There is no doubt that Thomas Aquinas, together with Augustine, is among the most influential authorities in the history of Western Christian theology. Through the centuries, theologians and philosophers have interpreted Aquinas and (re-)constructed his thought in various ways. As a result of this, a very rich variety of theological and philosophical positions have appeared that claim to be inspired by the thought of Thomas Aquinas. Positions like these are often labelled as a form of 'Thomism'. Although this can be helpful in bringing some order into the history of thought, there is also a deceptive side to it. Any classification runs the risk of obscuring the multiplicity of interests that have inspired the use of Aquinas as authority. On closer investigation many questions arise. What aims did Aquinas' recipients have in mind and how did an appeal to Aquinas function in their attempts to reach these aims? To what extent has their adoption of Aquinas' ideas and approaches been successful or unsuccessful in answering new questions, and in meeting the problems of their times? And, finally, what can we learn from these divergent forms of 'Thomism'? To these questions the Thomas Institute at Utrecht devoted its second conference, which was held from Thursday December 14 to Saturday December 16, 2000. Dit is een schitterend geschreven boekje, uitstekend vertaald en voorzien van verhelderend redactioneel commentaar. Volgens sommigen geeft dit bescheiden boekje een beter inzicht in het belangrijke werk van Rudolf Otto dan zijn wereldberoemde Das Heilige, dat al zo'n kleine 100 jaar niet alleen het best verkochte wetenschappelijke boek inzake religie is (zelfs boven Karen Armstrong, die zijn werk 'klassiek' en 'onovertroffen' vindt) maar ook het meest geciteerde. Otto's denken is de grondslag, het alfa & omega van religie-studie zoals Darwin dat is voor de biologie en Einstein voor de fysica. Otto gaat de dialoog niet uit de weg, integendeel. Hij gaat bijvoorbeeld een kritisch gesprek aan met de oudere William James. Hij doet dat inlevend maar zijn eigen ethische en religieuze standpunten zijn zo sterk uit ervaring voortgekomen dat James ietwat mismoedig moet constateren dat de rechtstreekse ervaringen, die op zijn vader een levensbepalende en richtinggevende leidraad waren geweest, er voor de zoon niet in zaten. Rudolf Otto, de invloedrijkste hoogleraar aan de vanouds liberale Marburgse Universiteit, heeft het moeten afleggen tegen de superieur opererende Martin Heidegger en zijn vooruit geschoven secondant Bultmann. Terwijl Heidegger triomfeerde op de maat van het heersende regime maakte Rudolf Otto zijn laatste voettocht naar de ruïnes van Staufenberg. De dood van zijn vriend en collega Jacobsohn die wat hij voorvoelde niet wou meemaken en de weigering van de instanties om zijn vaderloze zoon in het huishouden van Rudolf Otto en zijn zuster en nichtje te mogen opnemen, het was teveel voor zijn door malaria en chronische depressies geteisterde bestaan. Honderd jaar later is de opvatting dat Rudolf Otto Karl Barth, ondanks diens formidabele schrijfkracht, voorbij is gestreefd omdat fraaie woorden het intellect wel strelen maar geen aansluiting vinden bij de overgrote meerderheid voor wie de beleving telt.
