In de twintigste eeuw zijn er steeds nieuwe apparaten op de markt gekomen waarmee we in het binnenste van het levende lichaam kunnen kijken zonder de huid te hoeven opensnijden. Röntgenapparaten, echoscopie, endoscopie, magnetic resonans imaging (mri) en computertomografie (ct) hebben het lichaam schijnbaar transparant gemaakt voor de arts. Naast medici zijn het vooral de populaire media die de binnenkant van het lichaam toegankelijk maken voor het lekenoog. We zijn inmiddels gewend geraakt aan afbeeldingen van de kleinste en meest intieme details van het menselijk lichaam. Foto ’s van een foetus in de baarmoeder, endoscopische opnames van een prostaatvergroting of televisiebeelden van riskante operaties: niets blijft meer verborgen voor het oog van de publieke camera. Maar is het lichaam wel zo transparant? Waar medische en mediabeelden de binnenkant van het lichaam uitlichten, ontstaan interessante vragen. Hoe wordt de peratieve scheiding van Siamese tweelingen – sinds de uitvinding van de film – in beeld gebracht? Welke rol spelen pretecho’s en medischeecho’s in de prenatale zorg? Mogen geplastineerde, dode lichamen gebruikt worden als kunstobjecten om bezoekers meer inzicht te geven in anatomische structuren? Welke macht dichtte men het röntgenapparaat rond het begin van de twintigste eeuw toe? De medische blik waarmee we binnen in het lichaam kijken, staat niet los van de cultuur waarin deze verspreid wordt. Onze opvattingen over gezondheid, intimiteit en lichamelijkheid worden (bewust of onbewust) gestuurd door programmamakers, kunstenaars en filmproducenten. In zeven essays wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat het Transparante Lichaam in heden en verleden een constant maar tegelijk veranderend ideaal is geweest. Dit boek probeert een tipje van die complexe verwevenheid van technologie, wetenschap, media en cultuur op te lichten.

Onderzoek richtte zich tot nu toe in de meeste gevallen vooral op de productie- of distributiegeschiedenis van dergelijke films of hun pedagogische effect. Minder aandacht is er voor de tekstuele dimensie van deze films; de middelen die worden ingezet ter onderbouwing van hun informatieve, educatieve of commerciële argument. Intussen hebben 'gebruiksfilms' echter nog steeds het imago van een zeer 'formulair' genre. Today, it often seems as though Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) have reached a stage of normalization, at least in some countries and among certain social groups. Apparently some practices – for example in vitro fertilization (IVF) – have become standard worldwide. The contributors to Assisted Reproduction Across Borders argue against normalization as an uncontested overall trend. This volume reflects on the state of the art of ARTs. From feminist perspectives, the contributors focus on contemporary political debates triggered by ARTs. They examine the varying ways in which ARTs are interpreted and practised in different contexts, depending on religious, moral and political approaches. What do we see when we see, how do we perceive vision itself, and how do we speak and write about seeing and perception? The articles collected in this volume attempt to observe the constitution of perception, be it of a visual field or visible objects, but also of images which emerge in the mind, e.g. that of the reader in the act of reading. The act of vision is profoundly impure, and ‘seeing’ very much entails other modes of sense-based perception such as listening, touching, feeling, tasting or smelling. Various modes of seeing can moreover be observed within literary texts or in music, dreams, memory or all kinds of bodily experiences like dance, pain, sexuality etc., so that there cannot be any such thing as a clearly defined realm called ‘visuality.’ Moreover, ‘seer’ and ‘seen’ are mutually permeable in any visual practice, reflecting on the reciprocal relationship between the visuality of objects and the very act of looking, which could be understood not only as a sensual experience but also as an interaction, an intellectual performance and interpretation. But if there exists this inseparable bond between object and spectator, how can we distance ourselves from the act of looking and ‘show seeing,’ how is it possible to talk and write about ‘seeing perception’? The impurity of the visual, and the contextuality of all acts of looking, constitutes a common thread running through the articles collected in this volume. The ways in which images are perceived in Western culture are inextricably linked with verbal and textual structures and ways of thinking. However, the contributions in this volume are less concerned with the practical, political implications of a visual culture which formed the backbone of visual studies research a few years ago, and more with an adequate understanding of the various concepts and operations at work in theories of visual perception, of seeing, the gaze, and of focalisation.

In At the Edges of Vision, Ren?van de Vall re-examines the aesthetics of spectatorship in terms of new-media art and visual culture. The aesthetic experience of visual art has traditionally been described in terms of the distanced contemplation and critical interpretation of the work's form and representational content. Recent developments in installation, video and computer art have foregrounded the bodily and affective engagement of the spectator and, in retrospect, throw into question the model of spectatorial distance for more traditional art forms as well. But what does this development entail for art's potential for reflective, imaginative and experiential depth? Is art still capable of providing a critical counterpoint to the ubiquitous presence of sensational, yet short-lived media imagery when it speaks to the senses rather than to the mind? In a thorough examination of examples from painting, film, installation art and interactive video, and computer art, Van de Vall argues for a tactile and affective conception of reflection, linking philosophy and art. Looking at a Rembrandt self-portrait and navigating through an internet art work have in common that both types of work rely on a playful, rhythmically structured, sensuous and embodied reflexivity for the articulation of meaning. This sensuous dimension of playful reflexivity is just as important in philosophical thought, however, as the transcendental condition for genuine, open-ended reflection. Drawing on the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Lyotard and Deleuze on the one hand and on new-media theory on the other, Van de Vall develops a performative phenomenology of aesthetic reflection, visuality and visual art, in order to rethink art's ethical and political relevance in present-day digital-media culture.
