The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) and its numerous variants are amongst the most widelystudied in the entire Operations Research literature, with applications in fields includ-ing supply chain management, journey planning and vehicle scheduling. In this thesis,we focus on three problems from two fields with a wide reach; the design of public trans-port systems and the robust routing of delivery vehicles. Each chapter investigates a newsetting, formulates an optimization problem, introduces various solution methods andpresents computational experiments highlighting salient points. The first problem involves commuters who use a flexible shuttle service to travel to a maintransit hub, where they catch a fixed route public transport service to their true destina-tion. In our variant, passengers must forgo some of the choices they had in previous ver-sions; the service provider chooses the specific hub passengers are taken to (provided allrelevant timing constraints are satisfied). This introduces both complexities and opportu-nities not seen in other VRP variants, so we present two solution methods tailored for thisproblem. An extensive computational study over a range of networks shows this flexibilityallows significant cost savings with little impact on the quality of service received. The second problem involves dynamic ridesharing schemes and one of their most per-sistent drawbacks: the requirement to attract a large number of users during the start upphase. Although this is influenced by many factors, a significant consideration is the per-ceived uncertainty around finding a match. To address this, the service provider may wishto employ a small number of their own private drivers, to serve riders who would oth-erwise remain unmatched. We explore how this could be formulated as an optimizationproblem and discuss the objectives and constraints the service provider may have. Wethen describe a special structure inherent to the problem and present three different so-lution methods which exploit this. Finally, a broad computational study demonstrates thepotential benefits of these dedicated drivers and identifies environments in which they aremost useful. The third problem comes from the field of logistics and involves a large delivery firmserving an uncertain customer set. The firm wishes to build low cost delivery routes thatremain efficient after the appearance and removal of some customers. We formulate thisproblem and present a heuristic which is both computationally cheaper and more versatilethan comparative exact methods. A wide computational study illustrates our heuristic'spredictive power and its efficacy compared to natural alternative strategies.

This volume addresses challenges and solutions in transport and mobility of people and goods with respect to environment, safety, security and socio–economics issues, exploring advanced computational research work and the latest innovations in transport. This book brings together lectures presented at the ECCOMAS Thematic CM3 Conference on Transport held in Jyväskylä, Finland, 25-27 May 2015. It is divided into three parts, I: Reviews and Perspective, II: Computational Methods and Models and III: Translational Research. Each of these parts consists of contributions that present solutions to many transport challenges in this complex, rapidly changing subject. The work contains the latest achievements of European research and technological developments needed for the next decade through computational results of scientific and technical experts who have made essential contributions in transport efficiency in Europe. The material presented here is the state of the art in Transport Modeling, Simulation and Optimization in the fields of Aeronautics, Automotive, Logistics, Maritime and Rails. Furthermore, this volume also answers the question how to apply Computational Research in Transport in order to provide innovative solutions to Green Transportation challenges of identified in the ambitious Horizon 2020 program. This book is intended for students, researchers, engineers and practitioners that are computationally involved in the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the areas of optimal use of road, traffic and travel data, traffic and freight management ITS services, road safety and security, sea traffic management, etc.

In this report we review the central transportation logistics problems arising in the communal sector, using information gathered from several large communes in Finland and previous literature. Most of the communal transportation problems can be modelled as different variants of the vehicle routing problem. The basic features of the problems are described, modelled and analyzed, and the relevant previous research on the topics is reviewed. In addition, some possible new solution strategies are suggested.

A detailed review of a wide range of meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms in a systematic manner and how they relate to engineering optimization problems This book introduces the main metaheuristic algorithms and their applications in optimization. It describes 20 leading meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms and presents discussions and assessments of their performance in solving optimization problems from several fields of engineering. The book features clear and concise principles and presents detailed descriptions of leading methods such as the pattern search (PS) algorithm, the genetic algorithm (GA), the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm, the Tabu search (TS) algorithm, the ant colony optimization (ACO), and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. Chapter 1 of Meta-heuristic and Evolutionary Algorithms for Engineering Optimization provides an overview of optimization and defines it by presenting examples of optimization problems in different engineering domains. Chapter 2 presents an introduction to meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms and links them to engineering problems. Chapters 3 to 22 are each devoted to a separate algorithm— and they each start with a brief literature review of the development of the algorithm, and its applications to engineering problems. The principles, steps, and execution of the algorithms are described in detail, and a pseudo code of the algorithm is presented, which serves as a guideline for coding the algorithm to solve specific applications. This book: Introduces state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms and their applications to engineering optimization; Fills a gap in the current literature by compiling and explaining the various meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms in a clear and systematic manner; Provides a step-by-step presentation of each algorithm and guidelines for practical implementation and coding of algorithms; Discusses and assesses the performance of metaheuristic algorithms in multiple problems from many fields of engineering; Relates optimization algorithms to engineering problems employing a unifying approach. Meta-heuristic and Evolutionary Algorithms for Engineering Optimization is a reference intended for students, engineers, researchers, and instructors in the fields of industrial engineering, operations research, optimization/mathematics, engineering optimization, and computer science.
