This volume focuses on the grammaticalization of the definite article in German. It contains eight empirically-based papers which examine individual stages of the grammaticalization path from its beginnings as a demonstrative to the definite article and beyond. Focusing on cognitive, pragmatic, semantic and syntactic factors, the contributions not only address the development from pragmatic to semantic definiteness, but also deal with functional and formal changes starting as soon as the linguistic unit has acquired the function of marking semantic definiteness. Based on corpora spanning the entire history of the German language, from Old High German (750-1050) to present-day German, the analyses challenge the traditional linear model of grammaticalization and provide alternative pathways. What all the contributions have in common is the idea that the main grammaticalization path is accompanied or crossed by several side roads which lead to different destinations such as preposition-article-clitics, generic usages or onymic articles.

Die satzinterne Großschreibung im Deutschen befindet sich in der Frühen Neuzeit an einem Wendepunkt: Während des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts geschieht die allmähliche Ausbreitung der Majuskelsetzung auf alle satzinternen Substantive. Diese Arbeit geht der Frage nach, welche Faktoren die Ausbreitung der satzinternen Großschreibung im Deutschen beeinflusst haben. Dafür wird eine umfassende Analyse an einem Korpus aus Hexenverhörprotokollen durchgeführt, die quantitative und qualitative Untersuchungsmethoden miteinander verbindet. Der Fokus liegt auf der Analyse des Einflusses von Belebtheit, semantischer Rolle und syntaktischer Funktion. Diese Eigenschaften werden zunächst in Isolation betrachtet. Außerdem werden sie mithilfe statistischer Verfahren kombiniert, um Interaktionen zu ermitteln. Durch ergänzende qualitative Analysen werden zudem weitere Einflussfaktoren herausgearbeitet. Der Theorieteil bietet eine umfangreiche Zusammenstellung und Analyse des Belebtheitsbegriffs für die empirische Linguistik. Die Arbeit stellt eine detaillierte Untersuchung der satzinternen Großschreibung in der Frühen Neuzeit dar und beschreibt erstmals systematisch die Relevanz von Belebtheit und weiteren kontextabhängigen Faktoren für dieses Phänomen.

On the premise that syntactic variation is constrained by factors that may not always be immediately obvious, this volume explores various perspectives on the nominal syntax in the early Germanic languages and the syntactic diversity they display. The fact that these languages are relatively well attested and documented allows for individual cases studies as well as comparative studies. Due to their well-observable common ancestry at the time of their earliest attestations, they moreover permit close-up comparative investigations into closely related languages. Besides the purely empirical aspects, the volume also explores the methodological side of diagnosing, classifying and documenting the details of syntactic diversity. The volume starts with a description by Alexander Pfaff and Gerlof Bouma of the principles underlying the Noun Phrases in Early Germanic Languages (NPEGL) database, before Alexander Pfaff presents the Patternization method for measuring syntactic diversity. Kristin Bech, Hannah Booth, Kersti Börjars, Tine Breban, Svetlana Petrova, and George Walkden carry out a pilot study of noun phrase variation in Old English, Old High German, Old Icelandic, and Old Saxon. Kristin Bech then considers the development of Old English noun phrases with quantifiers meaning ‘many’. Alexandra Rehn’s study is concerned with the inflection of stacked adjectives in Old High German and Alemannic. Old High German is also the topic of Svetlana Petrova’s study, which looks at inflectional patterns of attributive adjectives. With Hannah Booth’s contribution we move to Old Icelandic and the use of the proprial article as a topic management device. Juliane Tiemann investigates adjective position in Old Norwegian. Alexander Pfaff and George Walkden then take a broader view of adjectival articles in early Germanic, before Alexander Pfaff rounds off the volume with a study of a peculiar class of adjectives, the so-called positional predicates, which occur across the early Germanic languages.

Das menschliche Leben kristallisiert sich in seinen individuellen und kollektiven, privaten und öffentlichen Manifestationsformen nicht nur um die Semantik(en) von Freiheit, Gleichheit und Brüderlichkeit herum. Das Primat einer friedlichen Koexistenz von verschiedenen ›Heimatwelten‹ und der Nächstenliebe wird in Zeiten gespaltener Gesellschaften oft in sein Gegenteil verkehrt – der Mensch braucht dem Anschein nach immer jemanden, nach dem er ›treten‹ kann. Am Beispiel literatur-, kultur- und sprachwissenschaftlicher Analysen wird einerseits hass(an)getriebenen Gemengelagen von Herkunft, Ethnie und Nationalität, Kultur, ›System‹ und Weltanschauung, Konfessions- und Religionszugehörigkeit, Geschlecht, Sexualität und Körperästhetik nachgegangen. Andererseits werden die Denkfiguren von Provenienz, (Un-)Sichtbarkeit und Erfahrungsintensität des Hasses sowie die Frage nach Reziprozität im Sinne von Präventions- und Abwehrmechanismen kritisch hinterfragt. The area of tension in interpersonal relationships casts, loaded with hatred, its pathological shadows. Human life emerges in its individual and collective, private and public manifestation forms not only around the semantics of freedom, equality and fraternity. The primacy of a peaceful coexistence of diverse 'homelands', charity and altruism is frequently turned into its exact opposite during the periods of split societies, since there seems to exist a common human need to always trample on someone. On the one hand, by means of literary, cultural and linguistic analyses, hate-driven conflict situations based on origin, ethnic group and nationality, culture, 'system' and world view, denomination and religious affiliation, gender, sexuality and body aesthetics are investigated. On the other hand, the concepts of provenance, (in)visibility and intensity of hatred experiences as well as the reciprocity question in terms of prevention and defense mechanisms are critically questioned.
