Marginal People in Deviant Places revisits early- to mid-twentieth-century ethnographic studies, arguing that their focus on marginal subcultures—ranging from American hobos, to men who have sex with other men in St. Louis bathrooms, to hippies, to taxi dancers in Chicago, to elderly Jews in Venice, California—helped produce new ways of thinking about social difference more broadly in the United States. Irvine demonstrates how the social scientists who told the stories of these marginalized groups represented an early challenge to then-dominant narratives of scientific racism, prefiguring the academic fields of gender, ethnic, sexuality, and queer studies in key ways. In recounting the social histories of certain American outsiders, Irvine identifies an American paradox by which social differences are both despised and desired, and she describes the rise of an outsider capitalism that integrates difference into American society by marketing it.

In 1914, social reformer Jack Robbins and a group of adolescent boys in Chicago founded the Boys’ Brotherhood Republic, an unconventional and unusual institution. During a moral panic about delinquent boys, Robbins did not seek to rehabilitate and/or punish wayward youths. Instead, the boys governed themselves, democratically and with compassion for one another, and lived by their mantra “So long as there are boys in trouble, we too are in trouble.” For nearly thirty years, Robbins was their “supervisor,” and the will he drafted in the late 1950s suggests that he continued to care about forgotten boys, even as the political and legal contexts that shaped children’s lives changed dramatically. Nobody’s Boy and His Pals is a lively investigation that challenges our ideas about the history of American childhood and the law. Scouring the archives for traces of the elusive Jack Robbins, Hendrik Hartog examines the legal histories of Progressive reform, childhood, criminality, repression, and free speech. The curiosity of Robbins’s story is compounded by the legal challenges to his will, which wound up establishing the extent to which last wishes must conform to dominant social values. Nawet dziś trudno sobie wyobrazić, że urodzona w Mławie Chawa-Eve w latach dwudziestych XX wieku prowadziła lesbijskie lokale w Chicago i Nowym Jorku. Napisała też, wydaną własnym sumptem, książkę "Lesbijska miłość", za którą zresztą deportowano ją do Europy. Być może zabrzmi to radykalnie, ale nietuzinkowa biografia Adams należy do najważniejszych epizodów w queerowej historii Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Joanna Ostrowska Historię Eve Adams czyta się z zapartym tchem. Trochę jakby była fikcją. A jednak się wydarzyła i to wcale nie tak dawno. Zachwyca upór głównej bohaterki, która za wszelką cenę chce być sobą i walczy o to, co dla niej ważne. Podczas lektury rodzi się pytanie: co jeszcze Eve musi przejść, by wreszcie spokojnie żyć? Niestety odpowiedź nie przynosi ukojenia. Mimo to lektura daje satysfakcję, bo od tej niezwykłej kobiety możemy wiele się nauczyć. Miriam ( Maria) Synger Żyła zawsze po swojemu, poza społeczną normą, poza okrutnym prawem. Imponująca historia Eve Adams brzmi jak wymysł bujnej wyobraźni, a jednak zdarzyła się naprawdę.
