A twelve-month program has been conducted to develop an optical diagnostic device for measuring the quality and jitter of a high energy laser beam. The beam diagnostic device developed consists of two sets of variable frequency, electromechanical scanners mounted in an orthogonal configuration, such that scans can be taken of a focused beam in both X and Y directions. The scanning system, its tracking of the beam centroid, data acquisition, and beam quality and beam jitter calculations are controlled by a PDP/8e minicomputer. A fully computer-controlled system has been found to be essential, since a large quantity of data is required for determination of beam quality and beam jitter/wander. The breadboard device was fabricated and assembled and underwent preliminary testing and checkout in the laboratory using a HeNe laser. Following this, the device was moved to the Capistrano Test Site for design verification testinf using a chemical laser. A hot firing was conducted on 6 June 1975 with the diagnostic device operating under full computer control. All expected data were obtained.

There is a growing need for high power YAG laser beam diagnostics with the recent introduction of such lasers in laser material processing. In this paper, we will describe the use of a commercially available laser beam analyzer (Prometec) to profile the laser beam from a 1600 W pulsed Nd:YAG laser that has a 1 mm fiber optic beam delivery system. The selection of laser pulse frequency and pulse width for the measurement is discussed. Laser beam propagation parameters by various optical components such as fibers and lenses can be determined from measurements using this device. The importance of such measurements will be discussed.

Wavefront control techniques are provided for the alignment and performance optimization of optical devices. A Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor can be used to measure the wavefront distortion and a control system generates feedback error signal to optics inside the device to correct the wavefront. The system can be calibrated with a low-average-power probe laser. An optical element is provided to couple the optical device to a diagnostic/control package in a way that optimizes both the output power of the optical device and the coupling of the probe light into the diagnostics.
