This book is a collection of cycle tours accounts based on trips that the author has made in the Alps alone and with friends over the last few years, covering Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Austria. Each route was chosen with a theme in mind, such as Napoleon's passes constructed to enable him to invade conquer Italy and the Venetian Republic. History and the local geography are brought together from the viewpoint of the cyclist's handlebars. Hopefully these accounts will help to bring the places to life for the reader. The Alps are a wonderful playground for cyclists, not just because of the natural beauty, the diversity of cultures but because they can really test a cyclist's mettle. Maps of the individual stages are provided to guide armchair travelers and saddle borne riders alike.

This book is a collection of cycle tour stories based on tours that I have made in the Alps alone and with friends over the last few years, covering Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Austria. All these tours were done on my Giant XT 660 which started life as a mountain bike. Accompanied by maps of each stage, photos and watercolours made along the way, the reader is left with a vivid impression of these fascinating routes. The author has tried to complement the usual routine of cycle touring with a parallel theme specific to each tour with the aim of giving the reader a bit more of an feeling for the places that I've been cycling through. This isn't just about long strings of tarmac but about places with often rich, fascinating histories. Cycling gives the rider a far better appreciation of places than say a car or a train, as the rider is more part of the environment and a rider is more approachable than someone encased in a metal box. So these accounts are an attempt to bring the places to life for the reader. The Alps are a wonderful playground for cyclists, not just because of the natural beauty, the diversity of cultures but because they can really test a cyclist's mettle. I've provided maps of my individual stages so that anyone inclined to follow these routes can use them as an inspiration.

Riding High written by Paul Howard and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-15 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The Tour de France is a world-renowned, almost mythical sporting competition. Since 1903, participants have battled not just with each other but also with the terrain, mechanical hindrances, the occasional sadism of the organisers and even with the fans. The demands on the riders are so great that the achievements and rivalries of those involved have passed into sporting legend. Recently, however, the event has been tarnished by the institutionalised doping of some riders and teams. As a result, the authenticity of these very achievements and rivalries has been called into doubt. To find out whether an increasingly sceptical public could once again laud the exploits of the past century with conviction, club cyclist Paul Howard set out to complete the Tour - in the year of its 100th anniversary - on level terms with today's riders. But, instead of teammates, mechanics and possibly the contents of the local pharmacy as support, he had a handful of friends, his dad and a sense of humour to see him through. With only three weeks to complete over 2,000 miles, was it possible to put a human face on a super-human undertaking? Could a fan's homage to past glories help the Tour regain its place as one of the world's most admired sporting challenges? Riding High is Howard's diary of his experiences as he rides the Tour de France route from start to finish, setting off each day only hours before the professionals, at each stage sharing anecdotes and noting the historical highpoints that have made the Tour one of the most iconic sporting events in the world.
