The Horn family, from the Foggy Bottom community on the banks of the Neches River in Deep East Texas, are a proud family. They are descendants of some of the earliest settlers in this very remote area. Foggy Bottom folks are known to be clannish and the Horns are viewed as a backwoods clan by the residents of the nearby town, Pine Hill. Anthony Hall, the bankers son, from Pine Hill is in love with Beth Horn, the daughter of the most prominent family in Foggy Bottom. Beth is a brilliant and vivacious young lady who is a premed student at the University of Texas, but the residents of Pine Hill still see her as that little Fog Head kid who sold peas from the Horn pea patch.. The prejudice on both sides of the river creates serious problems especially between the Pine Hills mayors son, Bobby Dodd and Thomas Horn. A story of trials, faith, integrity and perseverance unfolds as each of the Horn family tries to merge with their prejudiced laden environment.

In the town of lawmaking, three brothers thrived in lawbreaking Before Prohibition, Leo, Emmitt, and Charles "Rags" Warring worked as laborers in their father's barrel shop. When the (illegal) booze started flowing, all three quickly got caught up in the wild and sometimes violent underworld of Washington, D.C. Their exploits-including a lucrative numbers racket, gangland shootings, and high-profile courtroom trials-created sensational headlines and thrust them into an unwanted spotlight. However, their continual efforts to stay one step ahead of local police, the Federal Government, and the U.S. Congress took a toll on their personal lives. The Foggy Bottom Gang is a true crime gangster tale about an overlooked chapter in the history of America's capital city. "Leo Warring's account of his family's escapades in the world of bookmaking and bootlegging is an amazing compilation. If I didn't know better, I would have thought that the author was present for these court hearings or exchanges at bars and after-hours clubs. For a fun read, a page-turner, an insight into the 'victimless crimes' of the D.C. underworld, you need to read this book." -William Brown, President of the Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of the District of Columbia (1999-2018)

Beginning as a small town on the banks of the Potomac, the neighborhoods of Foggy Bottom and the West End grew into the capitals industrial center at the head of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, with factories, gasworks and breweries. The amalgam of working-class row homes, stately mansions and mills largely disappeared with the coming of the twentieth century, and in their place came the federal government, George Washington University, the Kennedy Center and the Watergate. With a collection of rare vintage images, local authors Matthew Gilmore and Joshua Olsen have compiled a stunning visual narrative of the evolution of these historic Washington, D.C. communities.

The beginning of this story highlights the most loving and positive side of a very close knit family who built and resided in one of the most Southern Southland parts of America known as Arkansas. The time captured the beautiful autumn season made up of perfect warm fall colors and cool springs. In spite of it being the era of “Jim Crow,” with innovation and hard work, The Black Family gained much wealth and success as well as constructed and built a well-managed Village called Blackville. The main part of this book is centered around the life of a young man named Damon Brazwell, Jr. who grew up in another area of the same Southern Southland part of America called Newport, Arkansas. Damon, Jr. and his family struggled through the hard times of the “Jim Crow” era as well, but here again, with the sole support of his family, young Damon also made it through with an abundance of education, knowledge, talent, experiences and success. This story is based on more of a spiritual aspect through the dreams as well as the real life events that Young Damon, Jr. endured.

The Legacy Of J William Fulbright written by Alessandro Brogi and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-13 with Political Science categories.

This insightful collection of essays details the political life of one of the most prominent and gifted American statesmen of the twentieth century. From his early training in international law to his five terms in the US Senate, J. William Fulbright (1905–1995) had a profound influence on US foreign policy, and his vision for mutual understanding shaped the extraordinary exchange program bearing his name. As a senator for Arkansas for thirty years and the longest serving chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Fulbright was one of the most influential figures of United States politics. His criticism of US involvement in Vietnam exemplified his belief in the effective management of international norms by international organizations—including the United Nations, which was the subject of his first bill in Congress. Yet alongside his commitments to liberal internationalism and multilateral governance, Fulbright was a southern politician who embraced the interests of the region's conservative white population. This juxtaposition of biased and broad-minded objectives shows a divide at the center of Fulbright's vision, which still has consequences for America's global policies today. This multidimensional volume covers Fulbright's development as a national and global voice on foreign relations, as he wrestled with the political controversies of the US South during the civil rights movement, worked with and challenged executive power, and shaped the Fulbright program for educational exchange.

Music In America S Cold War Diplomacy written by Danielle Fosler-Lussier and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-30 with Music categories.

During the Cold War, thousands of musicians from the United States traveled the world, sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Cultural Presentations program. Performances of music in many styles—classical, rock ’n’ roll, folk, blues, and jazz—competed with those by traveling Soviet and mainland Chinese artists, enhancing the prestige of American culture. These concerts offered audiences around the world evidence of America’s improving race relations, excellent musicianship, and generosity toward other peoples. Through personal contacts and the media, musical diplomacy also created subtle musical, social, and political relationships on a global scale. Although born of state-sponsored tours often conceived as propaganda ventures, these relationships were in themselves great diplomatic achievements and constituted the essence of America’s soft power. Using archival documents and newly collected oral histories, Danielle Fosler-Lussier shows that musical diplomacy had vastly different meanings for its various participants, including government officials, musicians, concert promoters, and audiences. Through the stories of musicians from Louis Armstrong and Marian Anderson to orchestras and college choirs, Fosler-Lussier deftly explores the value and consequences of "musical diplomacy."
