An eminent anthropologist examines the foundings of the first celibate Buddhist monasteries among the Sherpas of Nepal in the early twentieth century--a religious development that was a major departure from "folk" or "popular" Buddhism. Sherry Ortner is the first to integrate social scientific and historical modes of analysis in a study of the Sherpa monasteries and one of the very few to attempt such an account for Buddhist monasteries anywhere. Combining ethnographic and oral-historical methods, she scrutinizes the interplay of political and cultural factors in the events culminating in the foundings. Her work constitutes a major advance both in our knowledge of Sherpa Buddhism and in the integration of anthropological and historical modes of analysis. At the theoretical level, the book contributes to an emerging theory of "practice," an explanation of the relationship between human intentions and actions on the one hand, and the structures of society and culture that emerge from and feed back upon those intentions and actions on the other. It will appeal not only to the increasing number of anthropologists working on similar problems but also to historians anxious to discover what anthropology has to offer to historical analysis. In addition, it will be essential reading for those interested in Nepal, Tibet, the Sherpa, or Buddhism in general.

Christians and Muslims account for more than half of our world's population of nearly 8 billion people. Although both Christianity and Islam were derived from Judaism, the number of Jews alive is about 16 million, or roughly 0.2% of the global total. So how has the religion of so few had such a big impact? This book's thoroughly researched, up-to-date answer is based on highly respected sources, including mythologists, anthropologists, archaeologists, biblical scholars, political scientists, and historians - as well as Indologists, Sinologists, and Egyptologists. It may surprise some in its underlying simplicity. Although the answer obviously has to do with the fact that Iron Age ancestors of some of today's Jews authored portions of the Hebrew Bible beginning no later than the 8th century BCE, this book focuses on the fundamental role that Elite Male Dominance has played in both religion and politics since the origin of urban civilization in Mesopotamia around 3500 BCE. While acknowledging the centrality of animal sacrifices to all Late Bronze Age religious practices, including human sacrifices to some, it traces the origin of the divergence of the religions spawned in Near Eastern deserts and Indian jungles. It also briefly recounts and compares the relatively irreligious history of China. Among the many potentially challenging and related questions that the author addresses and answers are the following: Who were the Aryans and how did they High-Jack history? Who was the original Prophet of the Apocalypse and how was his religion used both by Darius I of Persia and, later, by all three major religions of the Desert Trilogy? An intimate cross-country look at the new debate over religion in the public schools A suburban Boston school unwittingly started a firestorm of controversy over a sixth-grade field trip. The class was visiting a mosque to learn about world religions when a handful of boys, unnoticed by their teachers, joined the line of worshippers and acted out the motions of the Muslim call to prayer. A video of the prayer went viral with the title “Wellesley, Massachusetts Public School Students Learn to Pray to Allah.” Charges flew that the school exposed the children to Muslims who intended to convert American schoolchildren. Wellesley school officials defended the course, but also acknowledged the delicate dance teachers must perform when dealing with religion in the classroom. Courts long ago banned public school teachers from preaching of any kind. But the question remains: How much should schools teach about the world’s religions? Answering that question in recent decades has pitted schools against their communities. Veteran education journalist Linda K. Wertheimer spent months with that class, and traveled to other communities around the nation, listening to voices on all sides of the controversy, including those of clergy, teachers, children, and parents who are Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Sikh, or atheist. In Lumberton, Texas, nearly a hundred people filled a school-board meeting to protest a teacher’s dress-up exercise that allowed freshman girls to try on a burka as part of a lesson on Islam. In Wichita, Kansas, a Messianic Jewish family’s opposition to a bulletin-board display about Islam in an elementary school led to such upheaval that the school had to hire extra security.
