"This informative book offers a wide range of knowledge on the technologies and applications of the cutting-edge field of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) in different areas of analysis. HRMS has changed the nature of experimentation and investigation in so many analytical realms. Determining exact mass determination, high resolution, and specificity-via the special features provided by HRMS instruments-is now possible for determining the composition of the analyte of interest, both qualitatively and quantitatively. High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry and Its Diverse Applications: Cutting-Edge Techniques and Instrumentation begins with an overview of the basic instrumentation techniques and goes on to present research on diverse new uses of HRMS in clinical testing, such as for therapeutic drug designing, discovery, and development; in forensic studies and investigations; in quality management systems; for analysis of pesticides; for analysis of single cells; in analysis of fossil fuels; for use in space and planetary science; and more. Chapters relay how HRMS plays an important role in the structure elucidation and unknown determination in many fields and is a great measure to be used for quantitative analyses. The book considers how these properties make the technique a strong aid in many areas. This volume highlights how HRMS can be a useful tool for scientists and researchers, faculty and students, and industry professionals in many scientific areas of study"--

It is a great challenge in chemistry to clarify every detail of reaction processes. In older days chemists mixed starting materials in a flask and took the resul tants out of it after a while, leaving all the intermediate steps uncleared as a sort of black box. One had to be content with only changing temperature and pressure to accelerate or decelerate chemical reactions, and there was almost no hope of initiating new reactions. However, a number of new techniques and new methods have been introduced and have provided us with a clue to the examination of the black box of chemical reaction. Flash photolysis, which was invented in the 1950s, is such an example; this method has been combined with high-resolution electronic spectroscopy with photographic recording of the spectra to provide a large amount of precise and detailed data on transient molecules which occur as intermediates during the course of chemical reac tions. In 1960 a fundamentally new light source was devised, i. e. , the laser. When the present author and coworkers started high-resolution spectroscopic stud ies of transient molecules at a new research institute, the Institute for Molecu lar Science in Okazaki in 1975, the time was right to exploit this new light source and its microwave precursor in order to shed light on the black box.

Applications of High Resolution Mass Spectrometry: Food Safety and Pesticide Residue Analysis is the first book to offer complete coverage of all aspects of high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) used for the analysis of pesticide residue in food. Aimed at researchers and graduate students in food safety, toxicology, and analytical chemistry, the book equips readers with foundational knowledge of HRMS, including established and state-of-the-art principles and analysis strategies. Additionally, it provides a roadmap for implementation, including discussions of the latest instrumentation and software available. Detailed coverage is given to the application of HRMS coupled to ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC-HRMS) in the analysis of pesticide residue in fruits and vegetables and food from animal origin. The book also discusses extraction procedures and the challenges of sample preparation, gas chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry, flow injection-HRMS, ambient ionization, and identification of pesticide transformation products in food. Responding to the fast development and application of these new procedures, this book is an essential resource in the food safety field. Arms researchers with an in-depth resource devoted to the rapid advances in HRMS tools and strategies for pesticide residue analysis in food Provides a complete overview of analytical methodologies and applications of HRMS, including UHPLC-HRMS, HRMS coupled with time of flight (TOF) and/or GC-Orbitrap, and flow injection-HRMS Discusses the current international regulations and legislation related to the use of HRMS in pesticide residue analysis Features a chapter on the hardware and software available for HRMS implementation Offers separate chapters on HRMS applied to pesticide residue analysis in fruits and vegetables and in food from animal origin

This new volume provides a bird’s-eye view of the properties, utilization, and importance of high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for phytochemical analysis. The book discusses the new and state-of-the-art technologies related to HRMS in phytochemical analysis for the food industry in a comprehensive manner. Phytochemical characterization of plants is important in the food and nutraceutical industries and is also necessary in the procedures followed for drug development, toxicology determination, forensic studies, origin verification, quality assurance, etc. Easy determination of active compounds and isolation as well as purification of the same from natural matrices are required, and the possibilities and advantages of HRMS pave the way for improved analysis patterns in phytochemistry. This book is unique in that its sole consideration is on the importance of HRMS in the field of phytochemical analysis. Along with an overview of basic instrumental information, the volume provides a detailed account of data processing and dereplication strategies. Technologies such as bioanalytical techniques and bioassays are considered also to provide support for the functions of the instruments used. In addition, a case study is presented to depict the complete phytochemical characterization of a matrix by HRMS. The book covers processing and computational techniques, dereplication, hyphenation, high-resolution bioassays, bioanalytical screening/purification techniques, applications of gas chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry, and more. Key features: Covers the fundamental instrumentation and techniques Discusses HRMS-based phytochemical research details Focuses strictly on the phytochemical considerations High-Resolution Mass Spectroscopy for Phytochemical Analysis: State-of-the-Art Applications and Techniques will be a valuable reference guide and resource for researchers, faculty and students in related fields, as well as those in the phytochemical industries.

Encompassing a wide range of techniques, spectroscopy is used to analyze chemicals, biological and pharmaceutical compounds, food and beverages, and high-tech materials. Covering the whole range of spectroscopic techniques, this book provides a thorough overview of underlying principles, techniques and applications. Dr. Hollas is a well-known author and authority in the field, and this book is an expanded version of his well-received lower-level book, Modern Spectroscopy, now in its third edition (0-471-96523-5). "The first edition of High Resolution Spectroscopy (the big book version of Modern Spectroscopy) was undoubtedly the best textbook on spectroscopy written at an undergraduate / beginning graduate level, and the second edition is an improvement... ...The coverage is broad, deep and even. The first chapters give a concise and clear introduction to spectroscopy, covering much that is accessible elsewhere only in more complicated discussions... ...The production values of High Resolution Spectroscopy are high, diagrams are well reproduced and the whole text is lavishly illustrated with many spectra and diagrams of apparatus.... ... it contains a great deal of material and is beautifully written; every library should contain a copy; every student of spectroscopy (no-matter what age!) should have a copy on their shelves." Extracts from a Review in Spectroscopy Europe, 11/3 (1999)
