A fracture mechanics approach was used to study high-temperature creep crack propagation. Crack growth rates were correlated with the C*-parameter which is an energy rate line integral. For materials conforming to a nonlinear stress and strain rate relationship in the steady-state creep range, specifically, those which can be properly idealized as purely viscous (negligible elastic and transient creep effects), C* characterizes the crack tip stress and strain rate fields.

This volume contains the edited version of lectures and selected research contributions presented at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE on MECHANICAL BEHA VI OUR OF MATERIALS AT HIGH TEMPERATURE, held in Sesimbra, Portugal, 12th-22nd September 1995, and organized by 1ST-Lisbon Institute of Technology, PortugaL The Institute was attended by 88 participants, including 15 lecturers from 17 countries including five CP countries. The lecturers were leading scientists and technologists from universities, research institutions and industry. The students were mainly young PhD students and junior academic or research staff with postgraduate qualifications (MSc or PhD). Fourteen students were from the five CP countries. The students presented research papers or posters during the Institute reporting the current progress of their research projects. A total of thirty three lectures, ten research papers and fifty posters were presented. This book does not contain the poster presentations and seven research papers were selected for publication. All the sessions were very active and quite extensive discussions on scientific aspects took place during the Institute. The Advanced Study Institute provided a forum for interaction among scientists and engineers from different areas of research, and young researchers.

Stress rupture tests on smooth and notched tensile bars and creep crack growth measurements under both static and cyclic loading have been made on virgin (new) solution annealed and naturally aged Type 304H stainless steel at 760C. The naturally aged material was taken from a component which had been in service for 15 years at temperatures in the range 690 to 725C. It is known that some deterioration in properties occurs with aging in Type 304 stainless steel and that this could affect sensitivity to cracking. This paper shows that crack growth rate can be characterized in terms of the creep fracture mechanics parameter C* and that the behavior of the new and aged materials can be rationalized in terms of their creep ductilities and the influence of ductility on the state of stress developed at a crack tip. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates that lower and upper bound crack growth rates can be estimated approximately from uniaxial creep rupture data.
