The everyday lives of indigenous and Spanish families in the countryside, a previously under-explored segment of Mexican cultural history, are now illuminated through the vivid narratives presented in Hijos del Pueblo ("offspring of the village"). Drawing on neglected civil and criminal judicial records from the Toluca region, Deborah Kanter revives the voices of native women and men, their Spanish neighbors, muleteers, and hacienda peons to showcase their struggles in an era of crisis and uncertainty (1730-1850). Engaging and meaningful biographies of indigenous villagers, female and male, illustrate that no scholar can understand the history of Mexican communities without taking gender seriously. In legal interactions native plaintiffs and Spanish jurists confronted essential questions of identity and hegemony. At once an insightful consideration of individual experiences and sweeping paternalistic power constructs, Hijos del Pueblo contributes important new findings to the realm of gender studies and the evolution of Latin America.

En el escenario de la consumación de la independencia de México, en septiembre de 1821, Yucatán se ha enaltecido por su transición en este proceso sin derramar ninguna gota de sangre en una época de cambios vertiginosos que presentaron desafíos y afectaron, de manera considerable, a los individuos en la Nueva España. Entre los combates ideológicos por el origen de la nación y su patrística, se ha encontrado en José Matías Quintana, padre de Andrés Quintana Roo, al «insurgente» de papel por su connotada participación como escritor religioso, así como por su intervención como un prolífico escritor y orador en la Cámara de Diputados del Congreso de la Unión, actividad política que Quintana mantuvo en el periodo de la consumación y, posteriormente, en los intentos de definir a México como una nación independiente. Tanto es así que este estudio parte de la necesidad de análisis de los escritos y discursos publicados que dieran cuenta de los pensamientos políticos de Quintana en sus propios contextos de actuación, alejándose de anacronismos, interpretaciones positivistas y política- mente dirigidas. Más allá de presentar una biografía de Quintana, Melchor Campos García se propone examinar y detallar la producción intelectual del sanjuanista en su propio contexto histórico, en el cual el político yucateco participaría mediante comunicados re- activos o proactivos. Dead Men Telling Tales is an original account of the lasting cultural impact made by the autobiographies of Napoleonic soldiers over the course of the nineteenth century. Focusing on the nearly three hundred military memoirs published by British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese veterans of the Peninsular War (1808-1814), Matilda Greig charts the histories of these books over the course of a hundred years, around Europe and the Atlantic, and from writing to publication to afterlife. Drawing on extensive archival research in multiple languages, she challenges assumptions made by historians about the reliability of these soldiers' direct eyewitness accounts, revealing the personal and political motives of the authors and uncovering the large cast of characters, from family members to publishers, editors, and translators, involved in production behind the scenes. By including literature from Spain and Portugal, Greig also provides a missing link in current studies of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, showing how the genre of military memoirs developed differently in south-western Europe and led to starkly opposing national narratives of the same war. Her findings tell the history of a publishing phenomenon which gripped readers of all ages across the world in the nineteenth century, made significant profits for those involved, and was fundamental in defining the modern 'soldier's tale'.
