Dabei stellt sie die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen dem physischen und dem seelischen Sein und deren Vorgängen, oder anders formuliert: die Frage nach der Natur mentaler Zustände. Im Lauf der Geschichte entwickelten sich immer wieder neue Standpunkte und somit auch Streitfälle, wie z.B. zwischen den Vertretern des Dualismus und des Monismus. Doch innerhalb dieser Lager gibt es über Jahrhunderte hinweg immer wieder Diskussionen die auf Grund der Zwietracht und Uneinigkeit bis heute zu weiteren Abspaltungen führen. In diesem dicht verzweigten Bereich der Philosophie, gilt Hilary Putnam als Begründer des Funktionalismus Anfang der 60er Jahre (weswegen ich im Titel auch gezielt auf „seinen“ Funktionalismus bestand), der als einer der klassischen materialistischen Monismen betrachtet werden kann. Der Funktionalismus fand zunächst breiten Zuspruch, wurde dann aber - allerdings Jahre Später - von Putnam selbst, durch externalistische Thesen innerhalb einer sprachphilosophischen Auseinandersetzung in Frage gestellt.
