Este estudio aborda las visiones de Juliana de Norwich, contenidas en su Libro de las visiones y revelaciones. Habitualmente las imágenes visionarias se resuelven según el estilo de una época, lo que en el caso de Juliana habría de corresponder al estilo gótico. Sin embargo, ha sido la novedad y originalidad de sus visiones las que han orientado esta investigación, pues si bien el punto de partida se sitúa en la iconografía gótica centrada en la Pasión de Cristo, las imágenes evolucionan y se «mueven» de tal modo que finalmente nos sitúan ante manchas que son propias de una abstracción que culmina en el monocromo, y ante unas texturas que se han llegado a conocer gracias al informalismo. En la apertura a un diálogo entre las visiones de Juliana y el arte «otro» del siglo XX, estas imágenes visionarias conocen un orden que adopta la forma de un díptico repartidas así entre abstracción (procedentes de la visión de la sangre de Cristo) e informalismo (derivado de la visión de la carne de Cristo). La confrontación que permite la apertura de un tiempo en el que se han puesto en contacto imágenes del gótico con imágenes del siglo XX, pone de manifiesto la posibilidad de la emergencia de una estética que se adelanta en siglos a su propia época, rompiendo así la linealidad temporal a la que nos ha habituado la historia del arte, para dar entrada a otro concepto de tiempo histórico. La comparación busca también comprender los distintos paradigmas epocales en los que el visionario o el artista han alcanzado a crear imágenes que no surgen de la mímesis de lo que es percibido a través de los sentidos exteriores, sino que atisban o alcanzan a contemplar lo invisible.

This book analyses how the three books of visions by Hildegard of Bingen use the allegorical vision as a form of knowledge. It describes how the visionary’s use of allegory and allegorical exegesis is linked to theories of cognition, interpretation, and prophecy. It argues that the form of the allegorical vision is not just the product of a medieval symbolic mentality, but specific to Hildegard’s position and the major transformations taking place in the prescholastic intellectual milieu, such as the changing use of Scripture or the shift from traditional hermeneutics to cognitive language philosophy. The book shows that Hildegard uses traditional forms of knowledge – prophecy, the vision, monastic theology, allegorical hermeneutics – in startlingly innovative ways by combining them and by revising them for her own time.

El 4 se pregunta por el lugar del visionario ;que es la «zona intermedia»; desde el abad de Saint Denis hasta Picasso, como a ese mundus imaginalis corresponde la «visión abierta» del Grial, tal y como fue planteado en una de las reelaboraciones del mito, estudiadas en el 5. This book addresses the history of the senses in relation to affective piety and its role in devotional practices in the late Middle Ages, focusing on the sense of touch. It argues that only by deeply analysing this specific context of perception can the full significance of sensory religious experience in the Late Middle Ages be understood. Considering the centrality of the body to medieval society and Christianity, this collection explores a range of devotional practices, mainly relating to the Passion of Christ, and features manuscripts, works of devotional literature, art, woodcuts and judicial records. It brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars to offer a variety of methodological approaches, in order to understand how touch was encoded, evoked and purposefully used. The book further considers how touch was related to the medieval theory of perception, examining its relation to the inner and outer senses through the eyes of visionaries, mystics, theologians and confessors, not only as praxis but from different theoretical points of view. While considered the most basic of spiritual experience, the chapters in this book highlight the all-pervasive presence of touch and the significance of ‘affective piety’ to Late Medieval Christians. Medieval thought, traditionally associated with great figures and with the works generated by an intellectual elite, encompasses, however, a much wider variety, and an extraordinary wealth, of texts, if one’s perspective is broadened to include all the individuals that made up the society in which it developed. Delving deep into the thought of an age entails an exercise of interdisciplinarity in which different dimensions and intellectual expressions all have a place. This volume provides a space where the various disciplines that tackle the multifaceted subject of medieval thought unfold. Through an analogy to the different levels of the acquisition of knowledge developed by the epistemology of the time, the volume is divided into four separate, albeit related, ways of approaching medieval thought: the sphere of senses and experience; the domain of opinion and language; speculation and the product of fantasy; and the activity of intellect and reason. This approach allows the conceptualisation of the many different ways in which the intellectual production of the Middle Ages manifests itself, but also demands expanding the meaning of what is understood as the thought, or knowledge, of an era. Next to major philosophical, theological, political and medical works and those related to other scientific areas, we find technical treatises devoted to various arts and disciplines. In short, the thought of an age consists of a rich diversity of elements, and branches into numerous expressions that involve all social strata.

Un saber, a veces arcano y enigmático, angélico, que le había sido infundido por Dios, "Soy la pequeña pluma que el viento sostiene, soy su instrumento", y que le ha valido ser nombrada Doctora de la Iglesia por Benedicto XVI en octubre de 2012.
