"This volume addresses the question of how societies with developed welfare and social service systems are assessing current needs and future directions in their residential child and youth care sectors. This includes dealing with the historical concerns raised about the placement of children and youth in residential care settings as well as identifying innovative strategies, which offer new pathways for the integration of this often neglected area of service with families and communities. This review builds on an emergent and growing literature of cross-national child welfare policies and practices including child protection arrangements (Gilbert et al., 2011) and meeting the needs of migrant children (Skivenes et al., 2014). Our contributors share a common child welfare goal of seeking to ensure healthy growth and development for children served in order to achieve desired social outcomes for the community at large. Each of the sixteen countries selected for inclusion will be viewed through a common template including the policy context (historical developments, key trends and policy initiatives), promising programmatic innovations, and information obtained from a matrix developed in an earlier research effort (Erasmus+ Project) by Sigrid James and colleagues from five European countries (James et al., 2021). Zudem wird die Entwicklung des Todesbewusstseins bei Kindern und Jugendlichen erläutert. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, über mögliche Anzeichen einer Suizidgefährdung, Motive und Ursachen für den Suizid sowie über suizidales Verhalten aufzuklären und damit häufig einhergehende psychische Störungen zu schildern. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf präventiven Maßnahmen und Hilfsmöglichkeiten für Hinterbliebene. Das Buch besteht sowohl aus einem informativen theoretischen als auch aus einem realitätsnahen empirischen Teil, der durch Umfragen bei Beratungsstellen und Schulpsychologen entstand. Families with a very ill child need help to get them through their very difficult situation. Volunteers can play an important role in the support network for such families. That is one of the results of a study commissioned by the German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation to research the situation of families with a child sick from cancer. In this volume Ulrich Mack describes a concept developed to help those laypersons who are assisting in this care.Usually, many other people also belong to the circle of supportive persons available: relatives, friends, neighbours, colleagues, classmates, teachers, educators, clubmates, other parishioners. Many who want to help, however, see themselves confronted with the question: How can I really help? Persons outside the immediate family often react with shock at the news. The concept presented here shows how to remove inhibitions, create understanding for the anxieties and worries of the families affected, and provide the necessary information and competences necessary to truly help. Volunteer workers are thus qualified to undertake such support activities. Such preparation is important because there are so many different areas where helpers can become active. This includes practical acts such as visiting the family at home or in the hospital, helping out in the home and garden, taxiing the family to appointments, babysitting the other children and generally relieving the parents of everyday tasks. In addition there are pastoral duties: staying with the family through difficult situations, showing respect and sympathy for their worries and problems, strengthening their hopes and courage, providing for understanding in their social environment for their situation. A separate chapter is devoted to concrete forms of help that can be offered.For the church such volunteer work in crisis situations can be an important challenge. The individual parish has the task of providing help and pastoral care with all due sensitivity. To this end, Mack provides some basic thoughts on how this can be best done to ensure success.

Ralph attended public high school in Ogden, Utah, where he was born. His higher education began at Weber State University and continued at the University of Utah where, following 3 years studying in the Netherlands, he completed B.A. and Masters Degrees. He earned a doctorate in Germanic and Hispanic studies at the State University of New York in Albany and also studied at universities in California, Switzerland and Spain. He has continued to travel extensively throughout the world, including several stays in foreign countries with the Experiment in International Living as leader of student home placement groups.He studied with Dr. Brewster Ghiselin, at the University of Utah who encouraged Ralph to write and stressed render, render, render in order to achieve a vital fullness. Be sparing yet incisive with language and recounting. An author should convey the greatest meaning through wise choice of words while avoiding verbosity. In reading many postwar German works such as novels by the "Gruppe "47, who formed a group that was always a very loose group, he quickly perceived that the same philosophy prevailed as it did with Hemingway. Words were to be treated with the greatest respect and used sparingly and precisely. Ralphs working life has been devoted to education and supervision in colleges and high schools. For the last 12 years he has been engaged in the evaluation of schools throughout the world. He is fluent in Dutch, German and Spanish, passable in French, dabbles in Italian and Bahasa Indonesian, and is able to utter a few words in other languages. He serves on the Arts and Humanities Committee, as an advisor to the Dean of Humanities at Weber State University and writes articles and reviews as a "guest columnist" from time to time for local newspapers. Ralph and his wife, Judith Howell Vander Heide, last year published with Xlibris,Chris and Louisa,a novel which spans 125 years of Mormonism, polygamy and changes in the church from its founding by Joseph Smith in New York State to the 1960s. The German Leaves grew out of Ralphs work for his Ph.D. and focus on German Exilliteratur Exile Literature. Although much work has been done on the subject, both in Germany and the USA, the exile writings are still not widely known, yet the literary production of the exiles comprise some of the most excellent pieces in the history of German literature. Indeed, America has greatly profited by the so-call "brain drain" of men and women writers from Germany and Austria. The German Leaves is a work of devotion to the cause of world peace and the great importance of teaching/enjoying the humanities, in encouraging children to be all they can be, to strive and achieve, but always while considering the rights and respecting the way of life of all humans who share our planet. Persons who have read the manuscript have expressed only words of praise. They agree that they have learned a great deal about a subject they had known nothing or very little about.
