The Swedish SS Reconnaissance Platoon in the SS division Nordland fought in varied battlefields, from Ingermanlands snow-clad hills, to the defense of the historic town of Narva, then further over Latvia's billowing landscape against the Soviet armored thrusts that were threatening Riga. Later on, the battalion fought in the muddy trenches in Kurland and on the plains of Pomerania. Finally, in the year 1945, it was pulled in and exterminated in the final battle of Brandenburg, in the last desperate defense of the chancellor's office in Berlin. This unit was unique as it contained the largest number of Swedish volunteers fighting for Hitler. The book is unique as no other book on the market has even tried to describe all events and battles fought by this unit from 1943 to 1945. The appendixes include very detailed information about the unit, its equipment, and its soldiers.

The international million copy bestseller recounting the epic turning point of the WW2 ______________ In October 1942, an officer wrote 'Stalingrad is no longer a town . . . Animals flee this hell; the hardest stones cannot bear it for long; only men endure'. The battle for Stalingrad became the focus of Hitler and Stalin's determination and its citizens endured unimaginable hardship as a result. But the eventual victory of the Red Army, and the failure of Hitler's Operation Barbarossa, was the first defeat of Hitler's territorial ambitions in Europe, and the start of his decline. An extraordinary story of tactical genius, civilian bravery, obsession, carnage and the nature of war itself, Stalingrad will act as a testament to the vital role of the soviet war effort. ______________ 'He reveals the full awfulness and human cost of the conflict with scholarly verve and deep sympathy' Ben Macintyre 'A superb re-telling. Beevor combines a soldier's understanding of war's realities with the narrative techniques of a novelist' Orlando Figes, Sunday Telegraph 'A brilliantly researched tour de force of military history' Sarah Bradford, The Times

"From the mud and bloody hell of Flanders to forlorn battles in Siberia and bitter street fighting to the very heart of Berlin 1945. From Africa to the Arctic, fighting men from a country frowned upon for its 'cowardly' neutrality participated in all the crucial battles of World War I and II. Their homeland was Sweden, which has enjoyed almost two hundred years of peace ... despite Sweden's policy of neutrality, no fewer than 23,000 Swedish citizens went to war between 1914 and 1945 ... [this book] also puts an end to the myth that most Swedes enlisted in Hitler's forces. Only 200 joined the Waffen-SS or the Wehrmacht of 1939-1945. In the same period, 9,000 Swedish citizens joined the Americans, the British, the Norwegians, and the Poles. In addition, well over 200,000 men of Swedish descent served in US, British, Canadian, and Australian Armed Forces"--Page 4 of cover

Early Holocaust Memory In Sweden written by Johannes Heuman and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-30 with History categories.

This book investigates the memory of the Holocaust in Sweden and concentrates on early initiatives to document and disseminate information about the genocide during the late 1940s until the early 1960s. As the first collection of testimonies and efforts to acknowledge the Holocaust contributed to historical research, judicial processes, public discussion, and commemorations in the universalistic Swedish welfare state, the chapters analyse how and in what ways the memory of the Holocaust began to take shape, showing the challenges and opportunities that were faced in addressing the traumatic experiences of a minority. In Sweden, the Jewish trauma could be linked to positive rescue actions instead of disturbing politics of collaboration, suggesting that the Holocaust memory was less controversial than in several European nations following the war. This book seeks to understand how and in what ways the memory of the Holocaust began to take shape in the developing Swedish welfare state and emphasises the role of transnational Jewish networks for the developing Holocaust memory in Sweden.
