Under Heinrich Himmlers ledning blev SS, nazisternas elitorganisation, en politisk maktfaktor som aktivt bidrog till den tyska krigsinsatsen under andra världskriget. För att kunna omsätta visionen i verklighet drev Himmler på en infiltration av olika delar av det svenska samhället. SS förgreningar och propaganda nådde bland annat den svenska polisen, personer inom läkarkåren, frivilliga till Waffen-SS samt jordbrukets intresseorganisationer. Lennart Westberg har gått till botten med att försöka kartlägga denna verksamhet, liksom Himmlers långsiktiga planer för Sverige.

The Swedish SS Reconnaissance Platoon in the SS division Nordland fought in varied battlefields, from Ingermanlands snow-clad hills, to the defense of the historic town of Narva, then further over Latvia's billowing landscape against the Soviet armored thrusts that were threatening Riga. Later on, the battalion fought in the muddy trenches in Kurland and on the plains of Pomerania. Finally, in the year 1945, it was pulled in and exterminated in the final battle of Brandenburg, in the last desperate defense of the chancellor's office in Berlin. This unit was unique as it contained the largest number of Swedish volunteers fighting for Hitler. The book is unique as no other book on the market has even tried to describe all events and battles fought by this unit from 1943 to 1945. This book investigates the memory of the Holocaust in Sweden and concentrates on early initiatives to document and disseminate information about the genocide during the late 1940s until the early 1960s. As the first collection of testimonies and efforts to acknowledge the Holocaust contributed to historical research, judicial processes, public discussion, and commemorations in the universalistic Swedish welfare state, the chapters analyse how and in what ways the memory of the Holocaust began to take shape, showing the challenges and opportunities that were faced in addressing the traumatic experiences of a minority. In Sweden, the Jewish trauma could be linked to positive rescue actions instead of disturbing politics of collaboration, suggesting that the Holocaust memory was less controversial than in several European nations following the war. This book seeks to understand how and in what ways the memory of the Holocaust began to take shape in the developing Swedish welfare state and emphasises the role of transnational Jewish networks for the developing Holocaust memory in Sweden.
