The architecture of Hiroshi Sugimoto and Tomoyuki Sakakida's New Material Research Laboratory revives ancient construction materials for the present The architectural practice of Hiroshi Sugimoto and Tomoyuki Sakakida is informed by a simple paradox: "the oldest things are the newest." In 2008, Sugimoto and Sakakida founded New Material Research Laboratory with an aim to develop "new" materials for construction based upon much older materials and techniques. The NMRL reinvigorates material from ancient times and the Middle Ages by using it in the context of a distinctly contemporary design sensibility and thus creating a physical connection between the past and the present. This beautiful hardcover volume delves into the art and architecture as well as the archaeological philosophy of the Laboratory. Each project is characterized by the materials used in its construction and is illustrated with rich full-color photography. Sugimoto and Sakakida are the principal authors of the accompanying text, extrapolating on their design ethos and its roots in Japanese aesthetic tradition; supplemental reading provides further historical context. The book also includes an annotated index of materials and classic Japanese techniques with information drawn from the Laboratory's research. An accomplished photographer in addition to his architectural work, Hiroshi Sugimoto(born 1948) is perhaps best known for his consistent experimentation with the limits of photographic representation, such as in his long-exposure series Theatresand Seascapes. Architect and furniture designer Tomoyuki Sakakida(born 1976) has been the director of NMRL since 2013. He currently teaches at Kyoto University of Art and Design.

This collection of essays is the outcome of an international symposium, jointly organised by the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Kyoto, and the Section of Japanese Studies of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in October 1998. It was the second in a series of three international symposia that the International Resaerch Center for Japanese Studies organised in Europe in conjunction with a European partner. The Leuven Symposium, which went under the general title of Translations of Culture, Culture of Translation, actually consisted of two parallel sessions. The first one was a workshop on Gender and Modernity in Japan. The second one was devoted to a reflection on Translation and Adaptation in the Formulation of Modern Episteme: A Reappraisal of Dodoens. The essays in the present volume are the reworked and elaborated versions of the presentations made at the latter symposium. It was clear that many of the issues one had to tackle had to do with translation, and that translation was not a phenomenon limited to Japan, but equally prominent in European cultural history, nor limited to texts as such, but involving broader cultural contexts as well. The result was an investigation of Dodoens's (Dodonaeus) importance in Europe as well as in Japan through the prism of translation, transposition adaptation etc., defined as a moving force in cultural and social development and an indispensable lubricant in the process of functional differentiation. The main concern was evidently Japan, but the organisers deliberately opted for a perspective that kept a certain distance from boundaries. Therefore experts in the field of Western herbals and botany were confronted with historians of early modern Japan.

Frog In The Well written by Donald Keene and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Art categories.

Frog in the Well is a vivid and revealing account of Watanabe Kazan, one of the most important intellectuals of the late Tokugawa period. From his impoverished upbringing to his tragic suicide in exile, Kazan's life and work reflected a turbulent period in Japan's history. He was a famous artist, a Confucian scholar, a student of Western culture, a samurai, and a critic of the shogunate who, nevertheless, felt compelled to kill himself for fear that he had caused his lord anxiety. During this period, a typical Japanese scholar or artist refused to acknowledge the outside world, much like a "frog in the well that knows nothing of the ocean," but Kazan actively sought out Western learning. He appreciated European civilization and bought every scrap of European art that was available in Japan. He became a painter to help his family out of poverty and, by employing the artistic techniques of the West, achieved great success with his realistic and stylistically advanced portraits. Although he remained a nationalist committed to the old ways, Kazan called on the shogunate to learn from the West or risk disaster. He strove to improve the agricultural and economic conditions of his province and reinforce its defenses, but his criticisms and warnings about possible coastal invasions ultimately led to his arrest and exile. Frog in the Well is the first full-length biography of Kazan in English, and, in telling his life's story, renowned scholar Donald Keene paints a fascinating portrait of the social and intellectual milieus of the late Tokugawa period. Richly illustrated with Kazan's paintings, Frog in the Well illuminates a life that is emblematic of the cultural crises affecting Japan in the years before revolution.

For more than 30 years, Hiroshi Sugimoto has traveled the world photographing its seas, producing an extended meditation on the passage of time and the natural history of the earth reduced to its most basic, primordial substances: water and air. Always capturing the sea at a moment of absolute tranquility, Sugimoto has composed all the photographs identically, with the horizon line precisely bifurcating each image. The repetition of this strict format reveals the uniqueness of each meeting of sea and sky, with the horizon never appearing exactly the same way twice. The photographs are romantic yet absolutely rigorous, apparently universal but exceedingly specific.

"Maruyama Masao (1914-96) has been widely regarded as an archetype of the twentieth-century Japanese intellectual. Immensely influential for his scholarlywork in intellectual history and political science, Maruyama also reached a wider public through extensive writing and commentary in the leading opinion journals of the postwar period, where he emerge as an outspoken advocate of lieralism and democracy. In this intellectual biography, Karube Tadashi traces Maruyama's childhood and youth in prewa and wartime Japan, vividly depicting a number of the key experiences that deepened his comjmitment to democratic ideals and motivated his quest to ground them in the autonomy and integrity of the individual. This was the perspective that informed Maruyama's postwar investigation of the problems of mass society and his efforts to reinerpet the Japanese tradition by dissecting its pathologies and tracing the alternative paths to modernity latent within it."--BOOK JACKET.

'Hiroshi Sugimoto: Still Life' includes 'Polar Bear' (1976), his first photograph from the Diorama series, exhibited along with later works from the 1980s, 1990s, and, most recently 2012. Where many of the earlier silver gelatin prints present animals, a number of the 2012 photographs including Mixed Deciduous Forest and Olympic Rain Forest focus on natural landscapes. He has likened the record created by photography to a process of fossilization - the evidence of a moment suspended in time.
