Die Arbeit durchmustert die Darstellung von Hirten in den dafur eigentlich nicht zustandigen poetischen Gattungen des Hellenismus (vor allem Drama, Epos und Epigramm). Durch Vergleich mit den entsprechenden archaischen und klassischen Vorlaufern wird gezeigt, ob und wie sich die hellenistischen Dichter (besonders Menander und Apollonios) dem Hirtenbild der Bukolik, vor allem naturlich der Theokrits, annahern. Kernstuck der Arbeit ist das Kapitel uber das pastorale Epigramm (Anyte, Mnasakles u. a.). Dabei erweist sich, dass manches von dem, was neuere Interpreten als Eigentumlichkeit Theokrits betrachten, sich auch hier findet; damit kann die Auffassung der theokriteischen Bukolik als Parodie auf eine zeitgenossische idyllisierende Sicht der Hirtenwelt in Frage gestellt werden.

Language and style of epigram is a topic scarcely discussed in the related bibliography. This edition aspires to fill the gap by offering an in-depth study of dialect, diction, and style in Greek literary and inscribed epigram in a collection of twenty-one contributions authored by international scholars. The authors explore the epigrammatic Kunstsprache and matters of dialectical variation, the interchange between poetic and colloquial vocabulary, the employment of hapax legomena, the formalistic uses of the epigrammatic discourse (meter, syntactical patterns, arrangement of words, riddles), the various categories of style in sepulchral, philosophical and pastoral contexts of literary epigrams, and the idiosyncratic diction of inscriptions. This volume is an edition of the poetical and grammatical fragments of Philitas of Cos, the early-Hellenistic scholar and poet who served as an exemplary model for the great Alexandrian poets. His output includes frivolous Hermes and Demeter which both had fundamental impact on later metapoetic imagery, and the Ataktoi Glossai, a glossary interpreting mainly Homeric idiom in pre-Aristarchean fashion. The Song of Songs, a lyric cycle of love scenes without a narrative plot, has often been considered as the Bible’s most beautiful and enigmatic book. The present study questions the still dominant exegetical convention that merges all of the Song’s voices into the dialogue of a single couple, its composite heroine Shulamit being a projection screen for norms of womanhood. An alternative socio-spatial reading, starting with the Hebrew text’s strophic patterns and its references to historical realia, explores the poem’s artful alternation between courtly, urban, rural, and pastoral scenes with their distinct characters. The literary construction of social difference juxtaposes class-specific patterns of consumption, mobility, emotion, power structures, and gender relations. This new image of the cycle as a detailed poetic frieze of ancient society eventually leads to a precise hypothesis concerning its literary and religious context in the Hellenistic age, as well as its geographical origins in the multiethnic borderland east of the Jordan. In a Jewish echo of anthropological skepticism, the poem emphasizes the plurality and relativity of the human condition while praising the communicative powers of pleasure, fantasy, and multifarious Eros.
