En esta ocasión en Selecciones Tradición Viva invitamos a nuestros lectores a una obra de caridad, pues siendo virtud teologal amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y al prójimo como a uno mismo, ofrecer a nuestros lectores un texto sobre la hispanidad es brindar una oportunidad para amar la catolicidad que anima el concepto de hispanidad, y amar al prójimo mediante el conocimiento de todos aquellos que aun viviendo a ambos lados del océano, sin embargo compartimos un mismo espíritu, y una misma lengua. Por hispanidad podríamos entender un temperamento moral e histórico que ha sabido trascender razas y tierras, y exorcizando al nuevo babel ha sido capar de rezar al Dios verdadero con una única lengua, y con un único espíritu. Desde la Asociación Editorial Tradicionalista faltaríamos a nuestra misión histórica si no hiciéramos hispanidad, por cuanto ello supone luchar contra la Revolución que fue capaz de desunir al pueblo que era el más poderoso freno a sus ansias de dominar el mundo. Combatir bajo las banderas de la hispanidad, es luchar cobijados por las banderas de la tradición, y luchar sobre todo, y ante todo, por el Reinado Social de Cristo. El texto que hoy ofrecemos es el discurso pronunciado en 1934 por el Cardenal Isidro Gomá y Tomás, que fuera cardenal primado de España durante la Cruzada de Liberación, en la que desempeñó un destacado papel defendiendo los principios de un catolicismo que algunos creían derrotado. El texto desprende el mismo optimismo en defensa de la unión de los pueblos hispanos que animó a miles de católicos españoles a luchar contra la revolución que trató de dar muerte definitiva a España en 1936. Aquellos jóvenes que defendieron la catolicidad de España fueron considerados como locos, pues se alistaron al bando presumiblemente perdedor, por cuanto ni tenía la supremacía militar, ni tenía la supremacía económica, ni el apoyo internacional, y sin embargo demostraron que con fe se combate ... y se vence. Con esa misma fe en el futuro de los pueblos hispanos el Cardenal Gomá nos alienta a unir los destinos de los pueblos que tras doscientos años de separación, cuando no de enfrentamiento, siguen soñando con una unión que los vuelva a hacer fuertes. First published in 1569, La Araucana, an epic poem written by the Spanish nobleman Alonso de Ercilla, valorizes the Spanish conquest of Chile in the sixteenth century. Nearly a half-century later in 1610, Gaspar de Villagrá, Mexican-born captain under Juan de Oñate in New Mexico, published Historia de la Nueva México, a historical epic about the Spanish subjugation of the indigenous peoples of New Mexico. In Epics of Empire and Frontier—a deft cultural, ethnohistorical reading of these two colonial epics, both of which loom large in the canon of Spanish literature—Celia López-Chávez reveals new ways of thinking about the themes of empire and frontier. Employing historical and literary analysis that goes from the global to the regional, and from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries, López-Chávez considers Ercilla and Villagrá not only as writers but as citizens and subjects of the powerful Spanish empire. Although frontiers of conquest have always been central to the regional histories of the Americas, this is the first work to approach the subject through epic poetry and the main events in the poets’ lives. López-Chávez also investigates the geographical spaces and landmarks where the conquests of Chile and New Mexico took place, the natural landscape of each area as both the Spanish and the natives saw it, and the characteristics of the expeditions in both regions, with special attention to the violence of the invasions. In her discussion of law, geography, and frontier, López-Chávez carries the poems’ firsthand testimony on the political, cultural, and social resistance of indigenous people into present-day debates about regional and national identity. An interdisciplinary, comparative postcolonial interpretation of the history found in two poetic narratives of conquest, Epics of Empire and Frontier brings fresh understanding to the role that poetry plays in regional and national memory and culture.
