Excerpt from A History of Music in England The purpose of this book is to sketch the main features of English music from its earliest artistic manifestations to the close of the nineteenth century. I use the term English in default of any other that is more exactly comprehensive; but the chapter on folk-music will be found to contain refer ences to the melodies of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, as well as to those of England itself. And, further, I have taken 'english music' to include 'music made in England', not solely music composed by Englishmen to adopt the latter signification alone would, I thought, in dealing with a country where foreign influences have played a large part, have unduly limited the scope of the book, and I have in fact, for practical purposes, considered as Englishmen those composers who, though of foreign blood, have made England their home and have produced for an English public all the works bywhich their name survives. Of these the greatest is of course Handel, who, as a naturalized Englishman who spent over forty-five years of his life in this country, has justly won a place in the Dictionary of National Biography; I have disregarded the few works he wrote for Italian and German audiences, but it seemed im possible to avoid treatment of the others, especially as their influence here has been so colossal. This collection of sixteen new essays, all commissioned from cultural and musical historians, was inspired by the themes and approaches of Professor Cyril Ehrlich's pathbreaking work on British social history in music. This volume discusses issues such as the music marketplace, piano culture, musicians' work patterns, music institutions, concert history, and national and urban identities - all with a clear focus on art music traditions. The cultural importance of serious music, from Belfast to Calcutta, has long been assumed for the period but rarely demonstrated. Here the issue is interwoven with the social and economic realities confronting music and musicians in Britain across the 19th century.

Russell's discussion reflects the broad categories of popular music activity during this period. His first section describes the musical activity generated by moral crusaders, philanthropists, educationalists, and reformers who sought to use music as a method of instilling habits of mind and body in the English working classes. The second studies the musical forms developed by entrepreneurs, particularly in the music halls. The third section focuses on the music and musical institutions produced by the community, illustrating the popular capacity for making as well as enjoying music. Perhaps most important, in this first thorough social history of popular music Russell shows how ideas and experiences gained through various forms of popular musical activity influenced popular political life.

The period 1700-1900, roughly from Purcell to Elgar, has traditionally been seen as a dark age in British musical history, while research into British music of the period has tended to concentrate on London. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that by 1750 Britain had a highly distinctive musical culture, in terms of its reach, the way it was organised, and its size, richness and quality. This is the first book to concentrate specifically on musical life in the provinces, bringing together new archival research and offering a fresh perspective on British music of the period.

Volume two of this history of music takes the story of English music from c.1715 to the present day. Apart from discussing the music of the principal composers, it focuses to a certain extent on the work of lesser musicians, and includes developments in light and popular music as well as in serious genres. The first seven chapters consider the main events chronologically, a further chapter deals specifically with folk music and popular music of all periods, and a final chapter covers social issues not otherwise handled in detail. There are over 100 musical examples, illustrating all chapters except the last, and all based on original sources. Volumes one and two together offer a survey of English musical history by a single author. British music outside England is not considered except where it is of direct relevance to the history of music in England.

This study records some of the main social movements which have influenced the development of musical taste and custom in England since the Middle Ages. It begins with a discussion of the functional nature of mediaeval music and then traces the evolution of a musical public, through the public concert, the eighteenth-century Italian opera and the provincial festival. The various effects of the Industrial Revolution on our music are considered, and the connections drawn between nineteenth-century social conditions and popular music making including the Tonic Sol-Fa movement, the brass-band contests and the Music for the People campaign. The status of musical education is examined together with the rise of professionalism. This in turn is related to the growth of large-scale commercialization, and the book concludes with a survey of the attitudes to music resulting from modern advances in technology and the social effects of the two World Wars.
