A longevidade das misericórdias, a sua importância na sociedade portuguesa e a sua capacidade de se adaptarem a novas circunstâncias políticas, religiosas e culturais merecem um estudo que tente delinear as suas principais linhas evolutivas. É nesse sentido que convergem os esforços das duas autoras que levaram a cabo uma tentativa de apresentar em traços largos a sua história de mais de quinhentos anos. Formadas num momento de grande prosperidade económica nacional, o reinado de D. Manuel I (1495-1521), com o intuito de praticar as catorze obras de misericórdia do catecismo cristão, as misericórdias portuguesas cedo se transformaram numa instituição abrangente e polifacetada, que absorvia um espectro variado de práticas de caridade. Mas também se foram constituindo num dos principais pólos do poder local do Reino, agregando as elites locais. Apesar de serem protegidas pelo poder régio, de quem dependiam diretamente, atuaram com uma grande margem de liberdade em relação ao poder monárquico, sem deixarem de acusar as configurações próprias de cada momento histórico. Embora fossem confrarias ou irmandades, as misericórdias distinguiam-se das restantes pela natureza jurídica, que era civil, e pelas atividades que eram de carácter social e dirigidas para o exterior de si próprias. Assim sendo, o consulado pombalino (1750-1777) e a regência joanina (1792-1816) consideraram-nas capazes de assegurar a assistência no reino. Mas para isso coartaram a sua tradicional autonomia com um conjunto de medidas que procuraram viabilizá-las financeiramente, orientar as suas atividades segundo as necessidades do país e fiscalizar o seu desempenho. Tanto o Liberalismo (1834-1910), como a 1ª República (1910-1926) como ainda o Estado Novo (1926-1974) seguiram essa mesma política, pois todos estes regimes viram nas misericórdias os órgãos centrais da assistência portuguesa. Só depois da Revolução de 1974 o Estado deixou de as considerar fulcrais na proteção social. Mas as misericórdias reagiram e mais uma vez se adaptaram e sobreviveram, embora à custa de transformações. Hoje continuam a ser instituições pujantes, assumindo um variado leque de serviços. Mantendo o espírito cristão, respondem na prática às atuais formulações de proteção e solidariedade social que decorrem do apelo da dignidade da pessoa humana.

During the early modern period, the brotherhoods of Misericórdia were established not only in the overseas territories ruled by the Portuguese, but also beyond their empire, reaching as far as the Philippines and Japan. The twelve chapters of this book examine this expansion by discussing different dimensions of the Misericórdias, such as administration, politics, charitable practices, finances, and forms of discrimination related to social status, gender, and race. Filling a critical gap in anglophone scholarship on the Portuguese Misericórdias, this work's previous absence has been criticized by scholars who believe the Misericórdias are crucial to understanding the past and present of Portuguese communities, both at home and abroad. The Iberian world played a key role in the global trade of enslaved people from the 15th century onwards. Scholars of Iberian forms of slavery face challenges accessing the subjectivity of the enslaved, given the scarcity of autobiographical sources. Population Politics in the Tropics explores colonial population policies in Angola between 1890 and 1945 from a transimperial perspective. Using a wide array of previously unused sources and multilingual archival research from Angola, Portugal and beyond, Samuël Coghe sheds new light on the history of colonial Angola, showing how population policies were conceived, implemented and contested. He analyses why and how doctors, administrators, missionaries and other colonial actors tried to grasp and quantify demographic change and 'improve' the health conditions, reproductive regimes and migration patterns of Angola's 'native' population. Coghe argues that these interventions were inextricably linked to pervasive fears of depopulation and underpopulation, but that their implementation was often hampered by weak state structures, internal conflicts and multiple forms of African agency. Coghe's fresh analysis of demography, health and migration in colonial Angola challenges common ideas of Portuguese colonial exceptionalism.

Norms beyond Empire seeks to rethink the relationship between law and empire by emphasizing the role of local normative production. While European imperialism is often viewed as being able to shape colonial law and government to its image, this volume argues that early modern empires could never monolithically control how these processes unfolded. Examining the Iberian empires in Asia, it seeks to look at norms as a means of escaping the often too narrow concept of law and look beyond empire to highlight the ways in which law-making and local normativities frequently acted beyond colonial rule. The ten chapters explore normative production from this perspective by focusing on case studies from China, India, Japan, and the Philippines. As Misericórdias são organizações sociais que integram em si um percurso histórico de grande significado, não só pelo simbolismo que caracteriza as suas ações, mas, sobretudo, pelas práticas de solidariedade que assistem os grupos de pessoas mais vulneráveis e desprotegidos. Conhecer, em profundidade, os seus valores tradicionais de intervenção, os rituais que descrevem os caminhos para o desenvolvimento das iniciativas, e, sobretudo, a ação estratégica que estrutura as respostas solidárias, favorece o seu desenvolvimento e permite concretizar e sustentar uma lógica de boas práticas no seu funcionamento. O presente trabalho de investigação situa-se no enquadramento dos eixos metodológicos da Sociologia de Ação e permite caracterizar a matriz da ação estratégica destas organizações, através da constituição de um diagnóstico sociológico e de uma visão prospectiva para 5 e 10 anos, através da constituição de um cenário mais provável entre cenários possíveis.
