Este livro traz um panorama dos estudos sobre a imigração internacional para o Brasil, abordando a história da imigração portuguesa em São Paulo e da imigração italiana no Rio Grande do Sul, seguidas por um grupo étnico menos pesquisado, como os russos no Brasil. In this book, distinguished historian Philip A. Kuhn tells the remarkable five-century story of Chinese emigration as an integral part of China's modern history. Although emigration has a much longer past, its "modern" phase dates from the sixteenth century, when European colonialists began to collaborate with Chinese emigrants to develop a worldwide trading system. The author explores both internal and external migration, complementary parts of a far-reaching process of adaptation that enabled Chinese families to deal with their changing social environments. Skills and institutions developed in the course of internal migration were creatively modified to serve the needs of emigrants in foreign lands. As emigrants, Chinese inevitably found themselves "among others." The various human ecologies in which they lived have faced Chinese settlers with a diversity of challenges and opportunities in the colonial and postcolonial states of Southeast Asia, in the settler societies of the Americas and Australasia, and in Europe. Kuhn traces their experiences worldwide alongside those of the "others" among whom they settled: the colonial elites, indigenous peoples, and rival immigrant groups that have profited from their Chinese minorities but also have envied, feared, and sometimes persecuted them. A rich selection of primary sources allows these protagonists a personal voice to express their hopes, sorrows, and worldviews. The post-Mao era offers emigrants new opportunities to leverage their expatriate status to do business with a Chinese nation eager for their investments, donations, and technologies. The resulting "new migration," the author argues, is but the latest phase of a centuries-old process by which Chinese have sought livelihoods away from home.

Este livro trata do político na língua e na relação entre as línguas, considerando o espaço de enunciação da Associação Italiana de Santa Maria (AISM), criada para "preservar", "resguardar" o patrimônio cultural dos imigrantes italianos da região de Santa Maria e da Quarta Colônia, e também para divulgar, valorizar e ensinar a língua italiana da Itália. Com a perspectiva teórica da Semântica do Acontecimento (2002), do linguista Eduardo Guimarães, analisamos as reescrituras das designações língua italiana, dialeto(s), imigrante/ italiano/descendente, cultura (italiana) e italianidade no texto estatutário de três instituições: Società Italiana di Mutuo Soccorso e Ricreativa, fundada em 1896, na cidade de Santa Maria, Sociedade de Cultura Ítalo-Brasileira Dante Alighieri, fundada em 1985, na mesma cidade, e Associação Italiana de Santa Maria, fundada em 1992, no mesmo local, sendo sucessora da sociedade anterior. A análise do funcionamento semântico das designações expõe os conflitos que se estabelecem principalmente entre a distribuição desigual dos lugares atribuídos à língua italiana, que no texto estatutário da AISM significa língua oficial da Itália, língua dos grandes escritores italianos, língua que deve ser ensinada, e à língua dos imigrantes italianos da região, designada dialeto, que significa patrimônio cultural dos imigrantes, sem lugar no ensino. Há muitas outras formas de contradição nos textos analisados, porém sempre manifestas pelas diferenças de sentidos e de lugares dados à língua italiana e ao dialeto. A essa contradição inevitável e irreversível constitutiva do espaço de enunciação, Guimarães designa político, sendo essa noção um deslocamento da noção de político de Rancière (2007). Nossa pesquisa destina-se a quem se interessa pela temática das línguas de imigração e pelos seus modos de (não) "preservação" institucionalizados por associações e sociedades italianas.
